After dinner the next night, I was pooped.
In Room 33, Ms.Lancaster made Rico and I play the game 47 times, losing each time. She kept us in the room for 4 bells, making us miss lunch and two training classes.
"This is not working!" Rico complained.
"She's not going to let us go till we've won!" I yelled at him through the hologram.
"Ms.Lancaster, we haven't eaten!" Rico says toward the genera direction of where Ms.Lancaster was last seen.
The game stopped with a large red YOU LOSE appeared on the hologram like it had the past 46 times.
"Ugh!!!" Rico screamed in frustration, collapsing to the ground.
I ran my fingers through my hair, sitting down, leaning on the hologram platform.
"You are a disappointment to our race." Ms.Lancaster said, appearing in her vampire way.
Rico and I stood up and stared at her. Her whit blazer, pristine as always, but her face showing fatigue, frustration, and even a bit of fear.
"The two of you are going to get your whole quadrant killed." she reprimanded, "Just... go. And nect time, come prepared."
Rico and I scuttled out of the room, feeling as mousey as we probably looked.
"I'm so tired...." Rico complained again.
"We have to go to Training now." I told him.
"And show everyone how terrible we are at Commanding? No thanks."
I held the collar of his shirt and dragged him to the training room, against his will.
"Sorry we're late, Mr.Fischer." I explained, "Ms.Lancaster held us back."
"Join the line." Mr.Fischer said, not looking up from his clipboard.
Rico and I obeyed, and I took my usual place between Laura and Myra. The last time I saw Myra, her bruise was a good 2 times darker. These pills were a miracle! I put a hand on my bruise, pressing it slightly. And it didn't hurt a bit!
"Drop and give me 20!" Mr.Fischer commanded.
Everyone fM ell to the floor, beginning the pushups. I glanced over to Laura who was done before I reached 7! Myra was also about the same speed as me. I was surprised at the speed I was at. I had been in the Ship for only about half a month and I'd gone from 0-60 in four milliseconds. I got up after 20, as did everyone else. 30 crunches and 45 sit ups later, Mr.Fischer was satisfied.
"Fetch your guns." he said, "Today we learn how to load."
So far, we'd been fighting with holographic guns, and all of us were excited about actually holding a gun for the first time.
We walked to the back of the room and opened very well camouflaged cubbies. We took out all three guns , plus ammunition and walked back.
"The 2 guns you call Gun A and Gun B will be preloaded." Mr.Fischer said. "Remember, they have a very limited supply. Pay attention to what I do next."
He flipped open a little empty space in the top of the gun, took a tab of bullets and plonked them in. He then shut it, and switched the gun off of safety.
"Easy."
The bell rang. Dinner. Rico and I gave each other, then Mr.Fischer a longing look of desperation for food.
"Off you go." he said, and we ran out of the class.
when I saw Pika in the cafeteria, I remembered what I had done... What had I done?
Screwed up the fate of both Humans and Zaphrodytes, thats what.
