"Living from the beginning, a thousand miles apart, all I can think of is the ache in my heart-, miles apart." I squeak my way through the high notes and Layla just smirks at me. I stick my tongue out in a funny whatever way and she chuckles.
"Take singing lessons!" Tanner whines from the back.
"'Cuz she'll actually do that," Layla jokes.
I hear Tanner mumble "Whatever," and put a cheesy smile on my face and look at him. He smirks, than glares and changes his attention back to his phone. Teenagers these days!
Layla parks the car outside Nonly's Bakery and we head inside the cozy little building.
"Why couldn't Dad take me with him," Tanner grumbled under his breath.
"Because not everything is about you," I say in a mimicky-knowy voice and Tanner groans at the fact that I heard his "secret" statement.
As we walk up to Ms. Nonly's counter, I plaster a smile on my face.
"Hey Ms. Nonly!" I say.
"Well hello Hailey! How may I help you today?"
"I would like my usual hot chocolate please with a cookie dough brownie please," I say with a wink on usual and a big smile on brownie.
Ms. Nonly looks at Layla for her order.
"Mm... That's sounds good, make that two," Layla says sounding sure about herself.
"Lay," I say,"My usual hot chocolate doesn't have whipped cream on it, you know."
"Well in that case," she starts, changing her mind,"Can I please an extra whipped creamy hot chocolate." She puts an extra big smile on her face, then turns her attention to me,"I don't get how you don't like whipped cream."
"I don't get how you do," I retorted with a grin on my face.
"Tanner?" Ms. Nonly asks,"What for you?"
"Uh..." He glances up from his phone,"Just a cookie and a glass of water please."
"Ok. You guys are number 23, I'll call you up when your food is ready," Ms. Nonly says in a soothing voice.
"Thank you!" I call back to her as we grabbed a table in the corner.
"How's your special boarding school that Dad can barely send you to?" I ask Tanner.
"Good. Better than being here. I wish I could stay there for summer break," he grumbled.
"Oh, brighten up."
"How bout you?" he argued.
"I-," I started, but Layla cut me off.
"Stop bickering you two. It's annoying."
"Order number 23!" Ms. Nonly calls from her counter.
"Yes!" Layla exasperated.
"Coming," I call out. I walk up to the pick-up desk to grab our food.
"Mm... Looks delicious. Thanks Ms. Nonly!" I say as a pick up our food.
"Have a good day Hailey!" she said.
"See you on Wednesday," I call over my shoulder back at Ms. Nonly.
"See you then," she said with a gentle smile.
I brought our order to our table. We ate in silence and left without a word. I dropped Layla off at her Mom's house and then Tanner off at the football field.
When I got home, I just plopped down on my bed and slept.
