I already hit the brakes but it was far too late. We rammed the horde head on. Hecktor hit his head on the dashboard leaving a gash that openly bleeds. The airbags didn't eject for Hecktor and he probably passed out. He will have minor head injuries for sure but they could be major.
Tapp tries to hold back Vibby as he slams into the back of my seat. He will most likely have a bruise or worse. Vibby didn't get hurt thanks to Tapp. Trixie falls down off the seat and may have hurt her paw. I hit the airbags in the impact and feel really dizzy.
The horde is only a foot in front of us and I can see the chunks hanging from their bloody mouths. The ones I hit and managed to kill, help block the way for the rest of the horde. My head spins as I evacuate as fast as possible. Hecktor is not moving so I run around to his side and drag him out. Tapp and Vibby wobble with Trixie as we all start to sprint the opposite direction.
My vision is slightly faded and I know I need to find shelter in a few hours or I will faint. The car won't work now and is banged up really bad. A couple miles back I saw a gas station, I knew that was our only chance. I gestured to head that way and Vibby followed what I was nodding at. She started moving that way with Trixie behind her.
I struggled to hold Hecktor and knew I wouldn't make it far with him. Tapp rushes over and helps me hold him. Tapp and I tried to pick up the speed with Hecktor in our arms. For a pregnant woman, Vibby was making good speed and was hard to keep up with. Even after the countless times of running and training through this adventure, Hecktor is way too heavy for someone who hasn't had a proper meal in 2 years. Then again, last time I picked him up was 4 years ago so who am I to speak.
Vibby must have known what I was hinting at because she was making a beeline right for the gas station. We don't even have to speak to know where and what we're doing. After about an hour, I thought I heard Hecktor groan or even felt him move but, it could've been the heat. Then, Hecktor screamed and kicked and I knew that he was conscious again. I told Tapp to drop him and he slowly lowered his legs. I put his arms down and calmly told him, "Hey, Hecktor. It's me, Tallulah! There is a gargantuan horde heading right our way. We might die if you keep that up, dingus!" Hecktor kept mumbling nonsense but we kept moving.
I had guessed it had a been about two hours and we came across the gas station. Good thing there was one that close, otherwise we would have had to travel through the night and obviously no one was in shape to do that. We rushed enough so that the horde wouldn't catch up to us but also enough to where we wouldn't tire ourselves out. We finally got inside and barricaded the doors. We didn't think the horde saw us but they were coming our way, chasing nothing. Slow on their feet but deadly to the bite, we saw them approach.
I let Hecktor sit while I looked around for somewhere safer to wait out. Vibby and Tapp took a look around before they got too exhausted and sat down. I was still searching the area, careful not to draw attention. I, myself, was exhausted but needed to make sure it was safe and that I didn't miss any supplies.
With daylight running out I searched around for water, canned goods, and anything of use really. I knew my jelly legs wouldn't hold much longer, but if I had a just a little bit of a chance, I wanted to take it. I grew full of fear and Hecktor could tell. "Tallulah, come sit by me. You need the res...."He dozed off before I could respond.
I looked out the dirty window and saw nothing but them. Those wretched things that no one can escape. I thought here was safe, I honestly thought we saw the last of them. The roads seemed clear, the path seemed safe. I guess you can't assume anymore. They were everywhere and the crowd led more of them. They limped around and they stretched for a mile. I let my brother down, I let my dog down, and I let these strangers in need down. There was just no way that we could escape, at least not until the morning. We were doomed inside of this rundown store with nothing but the sound of them to comfort us.
