Chapter 9 (not edited)

I smiled, glancing at Olivia through my rear-view mirror. Today was my turn to pick Olivia up from school, and to be honest I was quite happy about it. I hadn’t picked her up from school in ages.

“Hey baby, how was school today?” I asked, fixing my eyes back on the road.

“Um… school? It was okay” she responded, quietly. Her voice sounded hoarse; like if she had been crying. Her face was facing the window, her hair falling over her face.

“You sure? It doesn’t really sound-,”

“I’m fine, Jessa” she snapped, glancing back out the window. Yea, Olivia was definitely not fine. I didn’t understand why the hell she had snapped at me, but I did know that something was up. Olivia had never calls me by my first name. Ever. It’s was always ‘aunty’. Deciding to speak to her at home, I continued my way along the road.

The rest of the ride home was silent. All the way through the ride I was nervously chewing on my cheek. I knew I couldn’t let Olivia get away with snapping at me like that, I mean she was only 7, but I didn’t know what else to do other than to just drop the subject. She had never snapped at anyone like that; she was always happy. Now that she finally did, she left me speechless.

Barely before I even parked in the driveway, Olivia burst open the door, hopping out and quickly running towards the front lawn. She hung her head low making her hair cover most of her face. After I had shut off the engine, I unlocked the front door and almost tumbled over when Olivia scurried past me.

Oh no she don’t.

I grabbed her wrist, forcefully pulling her back. I gasped when I caught sight of her face. She had a huge bruise under her right eye, a busted bottom lip and a long scratch that crossed almost her whole small cheek. Olivia’s eyes widened as she winced tugging on her wrist.

“Let me go!” she demanded.

“What the hell happened to your face?” I asked, worriedly. She blinked, staring at the wall behind me.

“I fell” I snorted.

“Really? What did you fall from, the moon?” She narrowed her eyes.

“I just fell, okay? I fell from…er the stairs” Now it was my turn to narrow my eyes. Something bad had to have happened to her. Olivia didn’t do lies, she absolutely despised them.

“Your school doesn’t have stairs”

“They just added them recently” I huffed and crossed my arms over my chest.

“Olivia” I warned.

Jessa”

“Why don’t you just tell me how you got your black eye, busted lip and scratch on your cheek? Did you fight with someone? Oh my god you didn’t right?” If Olivia had fought with someone at school she would be in huge trouble. She was only seven freaking years old, what could she have fought about, animal crackers?

No one fights over animal crackers.

Not now, Brain.

Olivia looked at the ground, shifting uncomfortably from foot to foot.

“No, I just- I- I just can’t. I can’t tell you,” She whispered, blinking furiously. I crouched down on my knees, lifting her face up gently.

“Olivia, tell me who did this to you” I whispered. Her arms wrapped around my neck as she hugged me tight; but it was just over 3 seconds and then she pulled back. My eyes softened as I noticed tears streaming down her face.
