There was ring that echoed throughout the house.

"Not it!" my siblings yelled from upstairs. I sighed and stood up, not really wanting to get the door.

It was Sunday at noon, and my parents were still at church. I was happy my parents were pretty chill about religion and didn't force it on my siblings and me.

Anyway, it being Sunday at noon, I was surprised there were people still in the neighbourhood. I'm not trying to stereotype, because it's true to my neighbourhood, but I live in a neighbourhood full of white, religious folk who normally go to lunch after their Sunday services. I don't see how they could do it! Not the lunch, the uber religiousness.

I made my way over to the door, expecting my girlfriend, Tessa, so I mind the fact I was just in grey sweatpants with messy hair. Don't judge me! I had just woken up about two hours ago!

There was a little girl standing at my door. She had big, blue eyes and shoulder-length honey coloured hair. She looked to be about six or seven. She was carrying a Barbie doll with messy hair.

"Hi!" She chirped. I smiled and stepped outside, shutting the door. I was the oldest of four children, so I could deal with kids. I crouched down to meet her eye level.

"Hi there!" I said with a smile. "Are you one of Lilian's friends?" The girl looked confused.

"Who is Lilian?" She asked, turning her attention to the Barbie in her hands.

"Lilian is my little sister. What's your name?" I asked. Her face lit up as I said 'little sister'.

"I'm Katherine, but I like to go by Kat or Kitty," she said with a smile. "What is your name?"

"My name is Chase. It's nice to meet you, Kat. What is her name?" I was gesturing to the doll.

"This is Barbie!" She chirped. I smiled.

"So, Kat, does someone know you're out here by yourself?" I asked, wanting to return the girl home. I kinda didn't want to talk to her. Not to be mean, but I have three smaller siblings, and smol beans can be stressful... and annoying...

"Um..." She trailed off for a moment. "Maybe? I think I forgot to tell my brother. " When she said that, it sounded more like 'brudder'. I sighed internally.

"Do you live around here?" I asked and she nodded immediately. "Well, let's take you home. Show me the way, Kat. " Kat giggled as I stood up and began running. I jogged slightly to keep up with her.

"Can I play with your sister sometimes?" She asked innocently as she walked beside me. I smiled and nodded, looking down at her.

"Sure. As long as you tell your family where you're going before- hey, stop!" I grabbed her shoulders just before she stepped onto the road. A few moments later, a car whizzed by.

"You have to look before you cross the street." I chided. I looked both ways and saw it was clear, before letting her lead the way to her house.

After a second, she skipped up to her door and opened it. "Mama, mama! I'm home!" she yelled, leaving the door wide open as she stood in the frame. "I made a new friend! Can he come in?"

A woman had hurried to the door, scooping up Kat. I assumed it was her mom. The woman had the same eyes as Kat, but darker hair. They looked very similar.

"Katherine, I told you to stay in the backyar- hello..?" The woman had taken notice of me.

"Mama, that's Chase! He's my friend. He says I can play with his little sister, and I have to look before I go across the street," Kat chirped to her mother.  Her mom smiled at her.

"Hi," I said kind of awkwardly. A new face appeared: a blonde teenage boy. "I'm Chase. I live down the street.  She knocked on my door and I figured I should bring her home. I know how kids can be. I have three-"

The woman looked so relieved. "Thank you so much. I'm Jen. Come on in. " I smiled awkwardly.

"Alright," I said, stepping in, and shutting the door. She set Kat down and led me to a kitchen.

"Would you like something?" She asked. I smiled but shook my head.

"No, but thank you. " I said politely.

"We just moved in a week ago from Seattle," she said. "Tennessee is a big change. So, you have three kids?" I laughed softly.

"No, I'm sixteen. They're my siblings, and my parents' kids. " I replied. Jen laughed at that too.

"I thought you looked young, but I'm not one to judge. That makes sense though. How old are they?"

"Um, my littlest sibling is a boy, his name is August and he's eight months I believe. Then there's Ash, she's thirteen, and Lilian is six," I explained.

"Your parents surely have a handful. My son, Garret, is seventeen, and Kat is six. What grade are you in?" She commented.

"I'm going into eleventh. Also, Lilian is going into second. Her birthday is in a month or so, and I'm sure she would like if Kat could come. " I replied, with a smile.

"I'm sure Kat would like it, too. Garret is going into eleventh and Kat is going in second, so maybe you guys could have classes together. " I nodded and felt my phone buzz. I pulled it out of my pocket to see two messages, one from my mom and one from Tessa.

"Sorry," I said, slipping my phone back into my pocket. "My mom just texted me and asked me where I was. I should probably be getting out of your hair. If you ever need anything, I live in house 113. Come by anytime. " Jen lead me to the door with a smile.

"Thanks for bringing Kat back, " she said happily.

"It's no problem. " I replied, opening the door. "Have a nice day. " I smiled at her.

"You too, sweetie. " she said as I stepped out. I waved at Jen and shut the door behind me.

"Chase!" Kat yelled from an upstairs, screened window. "Bye!"

I waved at her. "Bye, Kat!" I called. I turned around and ran right into the boy from earlier, Garret.

"Hi," I said awkwardly. "Didn't mean to do that. Sorry. " He giggled.

I won't lie, this boy was pretty. No homo. He had paler hair than Kat, it was almost white, and it was trapped beneath a grey beanie, barely exposing the curls. He had deep blue eyes and pretty, white teeth that had surely been straightened. And his skin was very pale, his lips nice and pink. He was pretty tall and slim, kinda muscular.

"It's alright. I don't think we've met. I'm Garret." He said. His voice even sounded feminine.

Was he like, gay or something? He's not supposed to look like a girl. Boys are not supposed to make me feel like this... That would just be weird! Not trying to offend the gays or anything... I would rather not be gay though. I did call him pretty. Saying someone is attractive is different than saying you like them. Yeah... I have a girlfriend. I like her.

"I'm Chase." I said after a moment. "Welcome to the neighbourhood. " He smiled.

"Thanks. I'll see you around then?" He said, it seeming more like a question. I nodded.

"Probably, because we'll be going to the same school, live in the same neighbourhood, and are going to be in the same grade. " I replied. "I'll see you later. "

Boys are not supposed to be pretty.

Boys are not supposed to make my tummy flip.

Boys are not supposed to do that to me!

I do not like him. I'm just getting sick. Yeah, that's it.

Yeah... I don't even want to be friends with him... because I'm allergic... to his cuteness...

Agh! Curse you, brain!

I do not find Garret cute. I don't like him at all. No questions.
