I flew out of bed, my entire body drenched in sweat as I threw myself on the floor, cursing silently as I did. The dream seemed all too real and I was hesitant to look at the time; 3:00 AM. Sighing, I lifted myself off the floor and onto the bed, realizing the countless times I’d woken up in a cold sweat and hit the floor were taking a toll on my knees.

Sitting in the fetal position on my bed, I stared out the window at the starry sky, hearing a few people walk by. They must be coming back from missions, I thought, placing my chin on my knees. The person I’d been dreaming of must be out there somewhere and there has to be a reason I keep seeing him.

The scene replayed in my head each time I drifted off to sleep, this man being pierced through the heart. His scent, mingled in blood, splattered over my face, gagging me each time, frozen in fear as I watched him fall to the ground.

I didn’t know who this was, or why I was seeing it, but I knew I had to figure it out. My head turned to the side, my right side resting against my knees this time as I listened to the voices, waiting for the man to cross my path.

My eyes opened, I was standing right next to the man I’d dreamt of countless times tonight, blades poised in front of him defensively. There were others around, but my mind wouldn’t show them clearly, so they appeared as large black blobs.

I reached out and grabbed his hand, pulling him away from where he met his demise each time in my dream. He looked at me curiously, but followed me as I ran away from the field, stopping only when I thought it was safe.

Screams erupted around us, the blobs pointing towards the forest. The man’s ripping screams filled the spaces between the trees as his body was pierced through with a large scythe. My eyes widened as my face was once again splashed with blood, causing me to freeze in fear.

His body fell to the floor once again, leaving me drenched in his blood, still unsure of why I kept seeing his death. What do you want?! I screamed into the air, receiving no response. I fell to my knees next to the man, catching a faint smile as I awoke, yet again, from this nightmare.

Looking at the clock, it read 4:30 AM. My decision to move him this time must have prolonged his death… but how do I stop it? I sat in bed staring out the window, watching the birds fly by as I tried to figure out how to explain my dream to someone else.

My mind wandered as my eyes drifted from bird to bird, putting together all the pieces of the scene, so if I encountered it, I could stop it. My hand slipped from my knee, hitting the bed with a soft thud, but I didn’t move it back. In this kind of clichéd story, there’s only one ending.

I leaned back in bed, pulling the covers over me and awaiting the same nightmare I’d seen each time I drifted to sleep. A smile spread across my lips as I felt my body lightening, and my mind letting itself shut off, pulling me back into the dream-world.

The man stood in front of me, his blades poised in front of him defensively, the attacker standing in front of him. Suddenly, I pushed him aside, jumping in-between him and the attacker, at that moment his scythe tore through my chest. His eyes and my twisted body were like hazy reflections of the blood that sprayed everywhere.

At 5:00 AM, a man flew out of bed, drenched in sweat, the same nightmare haunting his dreams. I failed this time, too… He said to himself, slamming his fist against the windowsill.
