Chapter 6
Tires squealed as Ryan and the Mystery girl took off from the start. The crowd cheered as they watched the two cars pull away from the start line. Neither driver had any intention of showing their full potential right then. They were both holding back. It wasn't nearly the right moment to go all out. It was a large mountain, so they had some time to scope each other out.
Ryan gripped the wheel and changed gear. The car sped up only a little more, thanks to Ryan gently feathering the accelerator. He felt like something hadn't been right, like he shouldn't have accepted the challenge. He had a terrible foreboding that something bad was going to happen during this race. He shrugged off the feeling to keep his concentration as they approached the first turn. Ryan lifted off of the accelerator and pulled the hand brake. The rear tires locked up and Ryan threw the car into a drift. He maneuvered the car elegantly into the corner, but the mystery girl had followed him straight into it. She held her car literally parallel to his as the two slid through the first corner in total sync. This eerie synchronization continued for a majority of the race, until the last section. The two were nearly ready to drop their respective proverbial hammers when they saw two sets of headlights gaining on them and gaining fast. Two BMW M3's were now hot on the tails of the two drivers. They definitely weren't just trying to get a close up of the action either. One of them nudged Ryan's car several times, like he wanted to push him completely off of the mountain while the other kept the mystery girl from getting away.
"What the hell? Why are they trying to freaking kill me?!" Ryan exclaimed as he swerved to avoid another shunt from the BMW. Soon, there wouldn't be any more mountain and the sudden chase would spill into the city. Ryan hoped it wouldn't come to that because that would mean putting lives in danger. His hopes fell on deaf ears because in no time flat they were barreling through the city streets. The two BMW's were just as relentless as before, the sudden influx of traffic did absolutely nothing to deter them from their deadly intentions. Ryan weaved in and out of traffic trying to shake them but they were still on his tail. The mystery girl wasn't having any better luck with her pursuer either.
"What is up with them?" Ryan was still confused as to why they were being chased in the first place. Were they after him or the girl? These kinds of things crossed Ryan's mind as his concentration returned and he swerved to just narrowly miss an oncoming car. The BMW chasing Ryan had no idea a car was so close and couldn't react fast enough. The crunch of metal on metal was sickening and the two drivers were surely killed. Hearing the sound of twisted metal brought back Ryan's memory of his own accident and how he barely made it out alive. He shook his head and looked into his rear view. The mystery girl looked like she was having some trouble behind him. Without thinking, he slammed the brake and clutch, blocking the second BMW's path, allowing the mystery girl to pass. Ryan slowed down further and clipped the corner panel, throwing the final pursuer into a wicked tailspin. He spun and spun until a wall stepped in to stop the madness.
Ryan pulled alongside the mystery girl and motioned for her to follow. He led her to an abandoned parking lot and they got out of their cars.
"Thanks for saving me back there. I might not have made it if you didn't slow down." The mystery girl brushed her long black hair out of her face.
"Uh, yeah, no problem. So I guess our race is still undecided. But hey, I didn't catch your name." Ryan scratched his head and gave her a sheepish smile.
"I never mentioned it hotshot." She returned his smile with a playful wink as she got back into her car and drove off, leaving Ryan a bit bewildered.
"Who is she?" Ryan said to himself as he got back into his own car and drove off.
