Someone knocks at my door sometime later. I open it. Kody stands before me.
"I don't have much time."
"Okay. What's up?"
"I know Hunter isn't going to apologize for the way he acted earlier, so I came up to do it for him."
"Thanks for the effort, but it's pointless. He's done this multiple times before. It's nothing I can't take."
He isn't buying any of it.
"If it didn't faze you, you wouldn't have ran away with tears specking your eyes earlier."
"You saw that?"
"Watched the whole thing. And Hunter retold it to me at breakfast."
"Oh."
"Yeah. Why do you stay here if you get verbally bashed by Hunter all the time."
"The pay is amazing. I get to stay here, eat, sleep, exist, and free of charge. It's not even deducted out of my pay. That's the only reason why I stay."
He shakes his head as Hunter calls to him from below.
"Kody!"
Kody turns back to me.
"I have to go. It was nice talking to you. Maybe on your day off, we can hang out sometime."
My heart freezes and before I can stop myself, the words tumble from my mouth.
"I'd love to."
He smiles at me.
"Kody! Where are you?"
He waves to me before leaving. I close the door.
Did I just agree to go on a date with Kody?
