Chapter 8: Masato's POV

I sighed at the letter in my hands. I didn't like what it said one bit. "Hello? Masato? Everything okay?" Tammy asked me. I could still hear her voice was a little scratchy from the fire, but it didn't hurt for her to talk.

"Fine." I said. Her eyes narrowed and she leaned in closer.

"Your eyes say differently." She said.

"Oh really?" I asked. She nodded.

"Yes. So want to share or is it personal?" Tammy asked.

I debated then sighed. "My father wants me to return home to take over the family business." I said.

"Oh. I'm guessing there's some history there?" She said.

"Yes." I nodded.

Tammy looked thoughtful for a minute. "You love singing don't you?" She asked suddenly.

"Yes." I admitted quietly.

"If you took over would you have to stop?" She asked.

"Yes." I said firmly, starting to get where she was going with this.

"Then there's your answer." She said.

"To what?" I asked, completely loosing her.

"Yes to singing." She said. "Go home and tell that to your father." She encouraged. I hesitated and she smiled. "I'll come along, if you'd like. It's not often I can't get someone to say yes." She winked jokingly.

"I would greatly appreciate the help." I bowed my head to her.

"Don't waste time bowing, get packing." She shoved me towards the door.

We left early the next morning. Tammy had explained what was going on and informed everyone we'd be back soon. As we sat on the train I thought back to Ren's parting words:

"If you don't come back, I'm dragging you back. I won't lose to you like this."

I smiled to myself. "You should smile more, Masato." Tammy said from her seat across from me.

"Oh?" I asked.

"Yep. Smile like when you sing." She said, bright smile of her own on her face.

"I smile when I sing?" I thought about it and realized she was right. "Actually, I've been smiling more since I met Nanami." I noticed.

"Hey Masato, I was thinking about the best way to approach this and I think you should sing for your father." She said.

"Sing for him?" I asked.

"Ya. Actually, I'm bringing this up because I wrote this last night. You're the only one without one, so I figured it was yours." She handed me the tune and I read it over.

"Only one without one?" I asked.

"Oh, I've given a little tune like this to everyone else in STARISH." She explained. "So, what do you think?" She asked.

"It's short, but I'll be happy to sing it. I need lyrics however." I said.

"Well, you're an idol aren't you? Get to writing, I'm going to take a nap." Tammy leaned back and closed her eyes. I pulled it a pencil and went to work.

Despite having said she was going to sleep, I could see Tammy watching me out of the corner of her eye every once and a while. "Don't worry. I won't let my career end here." I thought firmly.

"Welcome home, young master." The maid bowed after opening the door.

I heard Tammy whistle and mutter something in English that sounded like "wow, a real rich kid alright."

"The master is expecting you. This way." The maid led Tammy and I to Father's greeting room. Unsurprisingly he was sitting on a mat waiting for us.

I bowed to him after entering. "I've come as requested, father." I said, still bowed.

"And you're not alone, I see. This isn't your girlfriend is it?" He asked.

"No sir. I'm a friend from the Master's program. I'm a composer." Tammy bowed as well. "My name is Tammy Natts." She added.

"Natts? As in the American music company?" Father asked.

"I'm impressed you recognized it." Tammy said as we both sat down. "So, I'll get right to the point. I don't think Masato should quit STARISH." She announced plainly.

"Oh? And why is that?" Father asked skeptically.

Tammy thought for a moment and I noticed her hand tapping on her leg. She was wearing her ring as always, except the gem looked green instead of white. "Masato has real talent and is already very popular. If you were to take him out of the industry you would harm only yourself." She said.

"Do explain." Father said, leaning forward ever so slightly.

"He's taking her seriously?" I thought in shock.

"Masato's popularity as an idol helps promote your business. Word of mouth is the best way to advertise and who is more talked about than an idol? Everything in the media right now about Masato and just STARISH in general is positive. That puts positive advertising towards you and your company." Tammy said smoothly.

"So you are saying you want me to give up my successor just for some good advertising?" Father asked.

"That's the best part. You wouldn't be." Tammy smiled.

"Tammy?" I asked softly.

"Trust me." She replied just as quietly.

Father leaned forward, looking not only interested but intrigued. "How so?" He asked.

"You don't technically need him to take over the company until you can no longer run it, correct? So let him stay on as an idol, gaining creditability and a good image, until you can no longer manage the company. Then Masato can take over." Tammy said.

I was a little impressed with her plan and apparently I wasn't the only one. "Not bad, but I want proof." Father said.

"I expected as much. Do you have a guitar?" Tammy asked. Father nodded at a maid and one was brought shortly.

"Ready Masato?" She asked. I nodded as she quickly tuned it. She started playing and I starting singing when she nodded.

The song was short, only about thirty seconds. Once Tammy and I stopped, another voice started singing and a piano filled the room.

"Hold on, that voice is... Satsuki?" I turned around to see all of STARISH, as well as Nanami. Tammy started back up with the beat and each one of my fellow members sang. I was shocked and after they finished it was a moment before I could speak.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"You think we'd let you go at it alone?" Shou answered simply. I smiled slightly to myself and finally looked at my father, who looked more shocked than me.

"Father, I beg of you. Let me continue as a member of STARISH." I bowed low, my eyes tightly shut.

"I suppose after that performance I have no choice. But I do expect you to start training to take over." He said.

"Yes sir." I said brightly.

"That's great Masato. You can keep singing." Tammy said.

"Thanks to you." I answered. "All thanks to you." I thought.
