Chapter 9

Nick and I are in the cafeteria with our friends. It’s lunch time and I’m worried about my friend Alec. She’s been awfully quiet during lunch, while the guys and Lara are goofing off. I know Lara is just trying to cover our friend. I smiled at her and told her it’ll be okay. We planned on telling Joey, he has the right to know. He and Alec took responsibility on “making love”.

I was just eating quietly, constantly nodding at whatever my friends are saying. I saw Alec taking a deep breath.

“I’m pregnant.”

Vinny’s spoon fell, all eyes on my friend.

Well, that was quick.

“What?” Joey asked, uncertain if what he heard was right.

“Joey, I’m pregnant.”

Joey looked mortified, constantly shaking his head in disbelief.

“You’re the father; you’re the only one I made love with.” Alec said in a quiet voice. But we all heard her vividly. I know she was afraid. I know that any second Joey would walk out from the cafeteria. Nick gripped my hand, he’s still in a state of shock. Vinny hangs his mouth ajar. Lara shook her head, like mine. We already know, the guys didn’t.

Joey shakes his head disbelievingly and stood, “I – I… I can’t do this.”

With those words, Joey went out as predicted. Alec is sobbing, Lara rubs her back for comfort. But Alec jerked her hand away, then stormed out of the cafeteria as well. I told them to snap out of it and go after her. We knew there’ll be yelling and fighting. And we’re concerned if Joey might hit her out of anger and confusion. But Nick told me his brother wouldn’t do such a thing. We weren’t convinced so we followed them.

We found ourselves in the parking lot. Alec was pleading Joey not to leave and talk with her. But Joey said no word, he hits the gas and off he goes. Lara and Vinny came up to her to comfort. This time she’s crying hysterically.

I know her life would get complicated because of the baby. She’s the captain of the volleyball team, she’s on the honor roll, she’s rich, she’s popular but chose to live out popularity because she knew I wouldn’t fit in her world. I felt bad, because I told her to tell Joey. But it’s the right thing to do right?

Nick slings his hand over my shoulder to hug me in comfort. He knows that I feel awful for my best friend. He asked me to leave Alec for now, and we both cut classes for a coffee.

I told him everything about Alec’s revelation, how I convinced her to tell Joey. Now I feel bad. I shouldn’t have told her that. Now look what happened to their relationship, because of me.

“You shouldn’t blame yourself Rain. You only did the right thing. I know Joey will think this through. He’s just as shock as all of us. Who wouln't be, right? He's still seventeen.”

“But, Nick. Do you think Joey will leave her?”

He shook his head. I know he’s thinking of an answer that won’t sound bad or hurt me. “I’ll talk to Joey about it.”

“I feel like I’m a terrible friend.”

“You only told her what’s best. It was her choice in the first place to tell Joey on that time. You didn’t push her to tell him immediately. I know you’re concerned for their future, Raina. I know you love your friend, she decided to tell him immediately without planning any privacy for them to just talk.”

I sipped in my coffee he still continues is words of comfort though I know it’s not helping me because I’m taking the blame. At least he tried. “Raina forget about it. I’ll help you sort things between them.” I nodded. He touched me hand making me look up at him, “You should also talk to Alec. She’s upset right now.”

I nodded at my fake boyfriend and heaved a sigh. “It’ll be okay, Raina. Trust me. I know my brother won’t back out of a huge responsibility. I have faith in him.”

I smiled at him and bobbed my head in understanding. Usually, I would pick a fight with him, argue, tell him he’s a stupid ass, but my brain wouldn’t function that way since he told me he’ll help me with his brother and my best friend. I hope you’re right, Nick.
