Emma raised her head from the work she was doing and stared at the intruder in her office with exasperation. What more did they want from her? Sighing, she shook her head and managed to put a smile on her face. She must remember to tell her secretary never to allow anyone in during working hours no matter how closely related they were to her.
Emma was the first of four children. Her parents were still alive and bothering her endlessly. Not that they were horrible people, in fact, they were the best parents ever. She was just tired of their countless reminders to get married. Were they not the same people who had told her to shun male company all through her years in school? Even at her age, they called her regularly at 10 o'clock every night to ensure that she was at home. How on earth was she going to get married if they kept on treating her like some thoughtless teenager?
"Emma? Emma?"
Emma quickly focused her attention on the sister who was sitting opposite her.
"Yes, what do you want this time?"
"I came to check on you--"
"-and?" Emma immediately cut in. She knew that her sister, Emily, was definitely after something. There was no way 'Princess' Emily will walk all the way to her office just to check in on her.
"Well, you know that I'll be going back to school next week and I'll need some money to pay for my fees and maybe some new clothes."
"What about the money I gave you two days ago. I thought you said that it was enough. You even told me it will last you throughout the term. Really, Emily, if this is how you are going to behave then don't come to my office anymore. You could have waited for me to come home."
"Does this mean that you are going to give me the money?"
"Yes, but don't come and ask me for money again for the rest of the semester. I won't be able to provide you with any. Tell mum and dad I'll be home this weekend. But for now, hurry up and leave this place before I get angry."
"Thanks a lot sis. Don't know what I'll do without you. I'll prepare your favorite food for you this weekend. Trust me." Emily quickly hugged her sister and ran out of the office.
"Mission accomplished," she said with sparkle in her eyes.
As soon as her sister left the office Emma called her secretary and gave her strict orders not to allow anyone in unless it was extremely important. At 29, she had everything she had dreamed of as a child. A job she loved, a good salary and her own place to live in. And of course, her car, which was a beauty. Apart from Emily, Emma had a sister who was called Emelia and a brother who was called Emmanuel. Or simply put Junior as he was named after their father. Emma found it completely embarrassing that all their names began with the letters Em-. What had her parents been thinking anyway? After all their mum was called Kristine and that did not begin with the letter E.
Pushing thoughts of her family aside Emma tried to focus on the work before her. She was trying to find a new theme for the Aller Telecommunications Company. They were the newcomers on the telecommunications scene in Ghana. They had given her specific guidelines to follow. They wanted her to create an advertising campaign to suit their taste. Sadly Emma shook her head. This was not going to work. The campaign had to suit the general public and not the telecommunication company. It was true that the company was theirs but it was meant for the ordinary Ghanaian. Satisfied that she had gotten her thoughts in order, Emma quickly noted it down and rang for her secretary who entered in a flustered manner. Emma sighed. Today was going to be one long, long day.

By 5p.m. Emma was one satisfied lady. She had been able to accomplish all her scheduled work on time. Slowly she started to drive her car out of the company's parking space. She lived at Dansoman in a house the company had given her. Given that she owned 60% of the company's shares, there was no cause for alarm because the house fully and legally belonged to her. When she had set out to establish her own company, her parents had been skeptical. They told her quite plainly that she was making a big mistake. But she was so determined that she had not listened to them. They had had a lot of disagreements with her over this. Luckily for her, however, her hard work and determination had paid off. A year ago, she had decided to go public to be able to get more capital to take care of their ever-growing number of clients. It had proven to be a step in the right direction. It was nice when you answered to no one--except to God. She was a Catholic. Everyone in her family was a Catholic. She had been born into it. She really tried to live her life the way God wanted her to but sometimes it was very difficult. Emma wished life wasn't so hard. When she had been young she had thought life was one big happy cycle. She had got everything she wanted without having to work too hard for it. She had grown up to realize her view of life had been erroneous to say the least. Nowadays she just took life one day at a time without thinking too much.
Her phone began to ring and Emma picked it up to see who was calling. When she saw who it was, she groaned inwardly. This was turning out to be quite a day. At her age, her parents reminded her daily that she was going to be an old maid if she didn't get married by the end of her next birthday. She didn't tell them that other women married at 34 or even 37 and still managed to have children. That would have worsened matters. Her parents hated comparisons yet everyday they compared her to others. In fact, at this point in her life she was sure they wouldn't mind if she got married to an old balding man. Emma shuddered at the thought. Surely she wasn't that desperate. Or was she?
The phone continued to ring sharply leaving Emma with no choice but to answer it. She quickly packed her car by the shoulder of the road and picked it up. The person calling was none other than Raymond Dadzie. Raymond Dadzie was a potbellied executive who worked in a bank. The two had met three years ago when Emma had gone for a loan for the establishment of her company. He had been of tremendous help then and Emma was glad to have a friend like him. Of late, however, he had been dropping hints in their conversation that he and Emma could become a couple. While Emma was flattered that he held her in such a high regard, she was not the least bit interested. She had told him so plainly on several occasions but he never seemed to listen. Said he had prayed and fasted about it for a month.
Emma sighed and answered the call.
"Yes, Emma speaking, how may I help you?"
"Emma, this is Raymond. I wanted to know if you're free for dinner tonight. There's this new place at Circle. I hear their food is great."
"Thanks a lot Raymond but I can't. I'm tired, really. I would have loved to go with you but tonight's not good for me."
"I can even bring the food over to your place if you don't want us to eat out. I just want to spend some time with you."
"Let's schedule it some other time. Maybe next week Friday. It's a holiday and we can meet at any place you choose. Is that okay?"
"I would have loved to meet you tonight but if you say next week then it's okay with me."
"Glad to know you approve. Okay, then bye." She then cut the line immediately so that she didn't have to hear him say something like 'I love you'. It made her cringe when he tried to be so caring and loving towards her. Unwanted attention was certainly a killer.
