They all went in the same car as Emma said it was more convenient. She didn't want to separate her friend from her fiancé and she didn't want to be separated from her friend either. Frank said they were going out to eat lunch at some fancy new place in Osu. It was quite far but Frank promised it would be worth it. He was usually right so no one protested.
In an hour's time, they arrived at their destination and true to his word the food was really good. Emma made a mental note to bring her family over one day or at least her sisters. She was sure she wouldn't hesitate to come.
Halfway through the meal, Frank had a call and he excused himself to go and answer it. Emma and Angela engaged in small talk with Emma filling her in on all the latest news in the country as well as on the home front. Both girls finished their meals before Frank returned. He swiftly apologized and told them a good friend of his would be joining them shortly.
Emma raised an eyebrow wondering who it could be and if she had met the person before. Angela replied in the negative with a slight shake of her head.
"Really? Eyebrow talk? You could just have asked. There is nothing too hard about this, is there?" Emma laughed and bowed her head, slightly embarrassed.
"So who is he?" Angela asked after she had regained her composure.
"Now am not telling. I just want to finish my meal in peace. You will meet him soon enough."
Angela smiled sympathetically at her friend. She didn't know this friend of Frank either. Most of his friends were out of the country. He only had a few friends at work that he occasionally hung out with.
"Alright. I love surprises too. I guess it wouldn't hurt." Except it did. Emma never liked waiting for news or information promised her. She would have preferred it if Frank had told her who it was from the start. Now all she could do was think about it. She hoped the guy was famous – that would make sense on some level. She started to tap her foot anxiously under the table but Angela gave her a warning glare, so she stopped. Her phone rang at that precise moment and she excused herself to pick the call.
It was work. Apparently there had been a mistake with a design and the client wanted it rectified immediately. She calmly explained to the client it would be rectified at no additional cost. Her company basically dealt in advertising. Hers wasn't a big one but slowly due to the good work of her employees they were gaining more clients. More clients meant more money which made working even more exciting. Being her own boss seemed to be the best decision she had taken in her life so far. Emma ended the call and turned to go back to her table. A little girl bumped into her and fell. Emma knelt to pick her up and apologized. She expected the little girl to be crying but she was giggling. She looked to be around 4 years and she was looking cute in her blue dress with matching ribbons in her hair. Emma lifted her up and wondered who she was running away from. She didn't see anyone in the direction of where she had run from looking for her.
"What is your name?"
Instead of answering, the little girl seemed to be scrutinizing her which made her uncomfortable so she put her back down.
"Let me go and tell one of the waiters you are lost so they can help you find your parents."
"No!" Emma drew back in surprise. She hoped she wasn't about to throw a tantrum. Her loud exclamation had drawn attention from the other patrons. "My name is Amanda. My uncle said to wait for him right here."
"Alright. I would stay with you until he comes then." Emma sat in a nearby chair and put Amanda on her laps. She offered no resistance. Emma liked the way she smelt and felt. She wondered what the uncle was up to and why he had left her unattended to. There were bad people in the world too.
Amanda bounced eagerly on her laps not perturbed in the least. She must really trust this uncle of hers, Emma thought. However, Emma wasn't impressed. She couldn't wait to give him a piece of her mind. She played with Amanda's hair absently wishing she had a child of her own. Her phone rang sharply breaking her out of her thoughts. It was only Angela. She was calling to tell her that Frank's friend had come round and she had better hurry up if she wanted to see him. Emma reassured her she will be there soon, mentally cursing the unknown uncle.
As soon as Emma ended the call, her mum rang and she groaned out loud. Amanda looked at her strangely and Emma quickly smiled. She took her off her laps and placed her on the chair she was previously sitting on. She had a feeling it was going to be a long conversation and there were some things she couldn't say in front of Amanda. She told Amanda she will be right back and picked the call.
Her mum spoke to her for 10 whole minutes! And after the call Emma could barely remember what they had been talking about. It had been a little about everything and not pleasant. As she got close to where she had left Amanda she realized the chair was empty and she looked around wildly. She saw a man carrying a blue-ribboned girl who Emma recognized as Amanda. Seeing as she was giggling once more, Emma realized that must be her uncle. Amanda saw her and waved and Emma waved back. The girl was cute.
Emma headed back to her table. Thanks to this uncle she had missed meeting Frank's new friend. She looked at her watch. She had been away for close to 30 minutes. Angela was not going to be pleased.
Emma squared her shoulders and walked back to the table. She could see Angela and Frank talking and laughing. She was so happy for them. She couldn't wait to have something like what they shared. She only hoped she wouldn't have to wait for too long.
Angela frowned at her the moment she sat down. "Where have you been? We were all waiting for you. Plus I called you and you still did not show up. Well...Frank's friend has left. You should have been here. He's handsome and very single."
Emma rolled her eyes at that. Had they been trying to set her up all along?
"And guess what?!"
"Yeah...what is it?"
"He is going to be the best man at our wedding!" Angela exclaimed beaming at her friend.
Emma hugged Angela right there and then. "I knew it! Gosh! We have to hurry up and start planning then. Leave everything to me. Your wedding is simply going to be the best. Fear not."
Angela laughed at that. Trust Emma to make a fuss about everything. She was sure that before the end of the day, Emma would have made a list about everything. She loved organizing and planning way too much.
"But did you hear what I said about Frank?"
"Well...I don't need to know him. Besides I don't want you guys to set me up with anyone. The wedding is all about you not me so let's focus on that for now."
"Aye, aye Captain" Frank said in mock salute.
Emma gave him a look and he promptly resumed eating while Angela laughed at the exchange between the two. Emma was truly the boss.
They all finished their lunch as quickly as possible. Frank insisted on taking Emma home. They said their goodbyes and Emma hugged Angela one last time sand continued waving after they were long gone. She was really going to plan the best wedding ever for her best friend. It was the least she could do.
Emma decided to take a nap after which she would start planning the wedding as soon as possible. There was no point in delaying. They were in the month of January and Angela wanted to have a June wedding as it was her birth month. Ideas were already buzzing in her head but somehow Emma managed to resist the temptation to start planning the wedding there and then and closed her eyes to sleep.
