"Come on. Come on! Turn green already!" Tremaine yelled. He was on his way home to his house to tell his girlfriend of 3 years the great news he got. He was trying to speed down the wet New York street lanes, but construction work was stopping him.

He was pissed. They really cut off two whole lanes just to fix a damn pothole that would be back in no time! All he wanted to go home and tell his baby, Lauren, the good news. He couldn't wait to see that smile on her face. This was gonna be big for them, if only the traffic would fucking move! He started to sing a little bit to calm himself down.

Looking at you day after day, I know I

Just gotta make it alright I just gotta make it

Just gotta make it

Just to see that smile upon your face I know I

Just gotta make it alright I just gotta make it

He worked a 9 to 5 that he loved and he wrote songs on the side. He was happy with the job no matter the pay and he loved how Lauren stood beside him throughout. He was even thinking about popping the question.

He shook his head. He needed to stay on topic. Get home, tell the news, go out to dinner, and come home for a little dessert if you catch his drift.

Everything I do I do for you and we

Just gotta make it alright just gotta make it

To the top of the world me and my girl we

Just gotta make it alright just gotta make it

He was singing his head off. As he was singing he was thinking about Lauren. Her beautiful smile, her dimples, her golden brown skin. Man, he loved that girl. He wondered how she was gonna react to what he had to say. He knew she was gonna be happy for him, she was that supportive, smart, and beautiful. He could actually see himself with this girl, maybe having a few kids, moving out that apartment.

"Oh shit." He said. He almost missed his turn. He turned onto his street. They lived in a nice little two bedroom, two bathroom apartment 20 minutes away from his job at the school, Langston Hughes High School. He was a P.E. teacher and he enjoyed it. He hopped out of his car and ran inside.

"In a hurry aren't we, Trey?" said Mrs. Williams, one of his neighbors.

"Yes ma'am." He said hopping on the elevator.

He took a chance to look into the elevator metal, he could see his reflection and he was checking to see if he looked okay. He ran a hand over his hair and straightened out his faded jeans and his black button down. He didn't know why he was nervous.

The elevator stopped and he got off and walked the short distance to his apartment, 513. He opened the door and it was quiet. He walked to his bedroom, heart beating fast in excitement, when he heard a noise. He stopped, unsure of what it was. He just shook it off and went to room and opened the door.

"Tell me you're leaving him," some man's voice said.

"Baby I'm-

"What the fuck is goin' on in here!" he yelled.

"Trey! It- it's not what you think-

"It's not what I think? You up here with another nigga in my bed that I bought and it's not what it I think?"

"Tell him, baby," the random nigga had the audacity to speak.

"Nigga, you need to shut the fuck up and get out of my house!"

"Go wait outside baby," Lauren said kissing the man in front of him.

The man left and Trey had to hold back. He wasn't about to go to jail over some nigga.

"Trey, I'm done." She said. No remorse in her voice, but a little attitude was there.

"What?"

"I'm done. I can't live like this. I'm not happy. I want a... I want a real man."

The fuck? "You think I'm not a real man? I provide for you, I do whatever it is I think is necessary to make you happy!"

"It's not enough. You're a fucking teacher! That ain't cuttin' it for me. That man right there he can give me whatever I want in an instant. He's not always waiting for a stupid raise that will never come. He makes his own money and plenty of it. That's what makes me happy. I'm sorry booboo it's just the way it is."

"Oh, so since he can buy you a whole bunch of worthless shit that's what makes you happy? Okay. Don't come crawling back to me when shit hits the fan. You can get the fuck outta my presence."

"Whatever. I don't want a broke ass nigga like you no ways." She said walking out.

He didn't understand why the fuck did this always happen to him. The girl he thought was the one always walked out. She fucking cheated on him and he wasn't having it no more. His mama always used to tell him there was a girl specially made for him out there, well he wasn't gonna get with any ol' girl just to meet a woman, no, he was gonna wait. He knew his Mrs. Right was gonna come. Eventually.

Melissa was sitting in her living room eating fried rice with her two best friends. It was the summer and most of the time they would just chill at each other's houses. They had been watching TV and now it was time to open up the fortune cookies.

"Gabby you go first," her best friend Jessica said to her other best friend.

"Alright, mine says: Love is when you know exactly what the other person is going to say before they say it. Isn't that sweet guys, doesn't that sound like me and Marcus!" Gabby said.

"It really does. You two are so cute. You are the best couple I've seen around school. I mean ya'll fight, but that shits normal."

Melissa rolled her eyes. They just kept going on and on. They were going to be junior, what the hell did they know about love. As far as she was concerned, love was for older people and it rarely lasted. She had either read it somewhere or seen it in a movie, but Gabby and Marcus were just in like. That's it.

"Melissa! Read yours," they yelled.

"Okay, whatever. Mine says: The one you love is closer than you think," she said in a monotone voice.

"Melissa! Stop talkin' like that. Who is this guy, you know a lot of times these things come true," Gabby said, all serious and shit.

"Whatever. Ya'll know how I feel about love."

"You need to change that baby girl." Jessica said.

"Yeah, we don't want you old, lonely, and watching Judge Judy reruns like my Auntie," Gabby said.

"That won't be me trust. It's just if I find love yay, if I don't ain't no harm to me."

True story. Melissa was strong in her belief. She wasn't gonna let finding love be her main goal in life. She wanted to be an independent, strong woman and she didn't need love to get that. She was gonna do her and if love never came her way oh well.
