 Chapter 3

I was currently sitting in Math class—the last period of the day—listening to Ms. Taylor blab on about fractions and equations. She wrote some numbers on the whiteboard, and a few of my classmates watched in wonder as she scribbled some more symbols. The rest of us were busy staring at the white clock, watching the minutes tick away.

Subtly taking out my phone, I texted Carrie, who sat directly across the room from me. I hope she has her volume turned off.

            “Hey Carrie :)” I sent.

I stole a glance at her, and she was sneakily - or not so sneakily - looking at her phone. It was a good thing our teacher doesn't look at the class, or else Carrie would be carried out. I laughed in my head—nice one Penny. I was thinking of another pun when my phone vibrated, and I peeked down again.

             It was from Carrie, obviously.

“Hey Pen. Ms. Taylor is talking about y and his ex again. (Sigh) Oh yeah, do you want to hang out tonight? With Lil? My house.”

I couldn’t go tonight, because I had to attend that party. I quickly typed a cover story.

“LOL. Um.. I would, but I have to babysit my cousin. Sorry :(“

Within seconds I received a reply.

           “Oh. James? Haha. Good luck.”

I smiled in relief at how easily she believed my lie—I’d told the same one many times before. I quickly typed a reply under the table.

            “Yup. I'll need it.”

"Miss. Woods, Miss Hall, what's so interesting?" Ms. Taylor inquired from the front of the room.

Of course she catches us, and not the archenemies shouting at each other in the front. Of course.

"Sorry Ms. Taylor. I was just explaining the equation you wrote on the board to Carrie." I replied.

"Oh. Just don't do that next time. Ask me."

"Okay. Sorry." Carrie replied, and the bell rang, just in time for us to make a mad dash out.

As we reached our lockers, I said, "Close one," and high-fived Carrie.

"I know right? Thanks for the lie, but you know I'm better at math than you."

"Seriously Carrie? I'm not even going to say anything."

"You just did." Why did this girl have to be such a smart aleck? I had a perfect retort coming up, but before I could speak my other best friend came running down the halls.

               "Hey guys." Lily squealed.

               "Hi."

"So, you're coming tonight right? We have everything planned out for the perfect catch-up from Summer!"

"Yeah... About that... I can't go tonight. I have to take care of James."I lied like a professional, as always.

"Awww. We were gonna watch all the new movies! But, it’s okay. Just come tomorrow!"
