I wake up to the sound of the usual hammering on rocks. Picks and hammers dig into stones, chipping out coal and gold.
I roll over in my thin cotton sheet, shivering as I turn onto cold canvas. Nights are getting colder, but we can do nothing about it. The government controls everything.
I sigh as a make my way out of my bed. I get dressed and leave the house on an empty stomach.
Footsteps are running behind me. I turn around and I see my brother rushing towards me.
"Hey Silvia, wait up!" he yells while he sprints towards me. I smile at him, and he beams back. Somehow he always finds the happiness in all of this.
"Hey Aaron, have good sleep?" I say with a hint of sarcasm.
"Totally..." Aaron says trailing off. I smile weakly, and he does the same back. "So what do we need to do today?" my forgetful brother asks. I shake my head with a smile on my lips.
"We need to check in with Samuel to see what we need to do today, remember?" I say matter-of-factly. Aaron is so forgetful; it's like a chore to constantly remind him of what we need to do.
"Oh..." he says, trailing off. He shakes his head at his forgetfulness and carries on walking.
~
A large white house stands before me and my brother. Red roses are lined up around the house. Tainted windows are placed all around the house.
I let out a shaky breath as we walk up to the door. It's always been a bit scary visiting the Mayor for your job assignment. I mean, you have no idea how bad it could be.
I walk up first, and jump up the stairs. I knock on the white door loudly and I hear footsteps behind the door. After a few seconds, the door flings open and a lady in a white blouse and a black pencil skirt greets us inside.
"Names?" she says, and Aaron and I reply to her question.
"I'm Silvia, and uh, this is um Aaron" I say pointing to my brother for the last part. Aaron nods, and follows me behind the lady.
"Just this way, the Mayor is expecting you." She says and leads us up a tall staircase.
We're taken to a large room, with a desk in the middle and a few chairs in front of it. The mayor sits behind the desk, and he is working on some paperwork. On the walls, there are self-portraits of ex-mayors, and maps of the Souyer Sector and the government.
The lady closes the door behind me and Aaron. The Mayor motions us to sit down, so Aaron and I take a seat.
The Mayor looks at us and studies us, taking in our features.
"So you're here to find out what your jobs are, yes?" Samuel asks us. It was more of a statement than a question.
I nod and my brother does the same. Mayor Samuel grunts and looks through his papers.
"I have assigned each of you to a job. It may be different to one another. You have your own responsibilities, and each job requires a certain amount of those, responsibilities. I entrust that you will do what I say, and that you will exceed in each job that I give you." Mayor Samuel says, and raises an eyebrow.
I nod, as that's what I think he was looking for.
He knits his eyebrows together and grunts. His lips pressed in a thin line.
"Aaron, your job is to..." Samuel says, as he flicks through pieces of paper. "Help with the mining. We are running low on numbers and you have the right body build for the job."
Aaron nods his head and smiles weakly. He doesn't seem overly excited.
"Silvia, your job is to..." the Mayor says, and finds the piece of paper with my name of it. "Join the assassin team."
My jaw drops to fifth gear. Could I ever bring myself to murder somebody?
