I honestly can’t believe what just happened…
“Umm… Why did you pick the a-assassin team?” I stutter. My tongue is tied, I have no idea how I could have been picked to be an assassin???
“Well you see Silvia, you’re short, sneaky, and can hide perfectly. With a bit of practise, you will be the best assassin we have ever seen.”
I nod slowly. I still can’t believe it.
“Umm, is there any chance I can do a different job?” I ask nervously.
He shakes his head violently. “Nope. We have selected you as an assassin, and that is what you are going to be.” Samuel says sternly.
I turn to my brother pleadingly, and he just shrugs.
My eyebrows knit together. There’s no way I can do this.
“Silvia, your training starts tomorrow morning at 6.30am. You will get your equipment then and you will go through the basics with your trainers and other people, just like you, that have been selected as an assassin.” Mayor Samuel says. He turns to Aaron and explains what’s happening for him. “Aaron, you will start at 6.30 tomorrow morning too, and you will get the lowdown of your job there. You will both meet your trainers at the community centre. You are now excused.”
Aaron and I stand up from out of our seats and exit the room, “Thanks.” I say to the Mayor as I’m leaving and Aaron does the same.
~
Aaron and I arrive back at our home. It’s uncomfortably empty and quiet. It always has been. There is only a lounge, bathroom, 1 bedroom and a kitchen. Everything is rundown, and broken. We barely get by without our parents…
~
I scream and kick out of a firm grip of hands on my shoulders.
“LET ME GOOOO!” I yell. Tears welling up behind my eyes, my nose tingles. “MUM! DAD! COME BACK!” I scream, but nothing happens. I search frantically for my brother.
“Aaron?!” no one replies.
“Quiet girl…” a deep and raspy voice says from underneath a dark hood, a Russian accent obvious in his voice.
I whimper at the sound that came out of the man’s lips. I’m horrified. Where is everyone?! Mum? Dad? Aaron?
“SILVIA! RUUUUUUNNN!!!!!!!!” a long and piercing scream echoes through the overgrown valley, where I live. I search frantically for where the voice came from. “SILVIA, GOOOOOOOOOO!” it’s my dad… he’s calling me to leave?
“DAD, WHERE ARE YOU?!” I yell, kicking to get out of the grip of the man’s hands.
“JUST RUN! I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN! I LOVE YOU!” My dad’s voice rings out. Tears spring down my cheeks, my eyes going bloodshot.
I scramble out of the grip of strong hands and brake free.
And I run.
~
I look out the shattered window, and glance at the position of the sun.
Its 11.00am, what to do, what to do? I think to myself. Well seeing that I’m going to be an assassin from now on, whom I am totally going to regret, I might as well get in some extra training, right?
“Aaron, I’m going out! Bye!!” I yell from the door and fling it open.
“Ok! Be safe!” He yells back. And I leave the house, making my way to the town square.
~
Skinny people scamper around the town square. Bony arms and legs, bulging eyes and bones, unfed stomachs and untrimmed, grimy hair, it’s the same for every person here. Apart from the Mayor… he gets everything that he wants. What we all need.
Money is scarce; the death penalty takes its toll daily.
But the local police don’t take care of people’s death. The assassin squad does, the squad that I will soon be joining. I will have to be a murderer. A blood-thirsty killer.
