I woke up to someone shaking me gently. I opened my eyes to see Kyle leaning over me with a look of concern on his face like no other.

I remember what had happened, and suddenly feel like shit. Looking back on the situation, running wasn’t the best of solutions. I should’ve told him my concerns, and maybe compromised to use half of the budget or something. But nooooo. Me and my stupid self. Always fucking things up.

Kyle sighs in relief, as though I had just woken up from death.

“Y-y-you scared me there… I thought you had… you know… the way you had were just out cold and wouldn’t wake up after I tried every trick in the book… I can’t tell you how much you scared me. Don’t do that again.” Kyle half says, half cries. Lord, was I really so drained that I didn’t wake up through that?

“At least I knew where to find you… I got a feeling you would come here… Do you, uhhh... wanna talk about it?” Kyle sputters out, acting somewhat like the time he told me about his run in with whoever the shit faced douche who had the nerve to punch MY Kyle in the eye. It makes me sad just thinking about the possibility of us going back to that stage.

“I… I just… I’ve never really been treated so royally in my life. I didn’t know what to make of it… I mean, I practically live off of ramen noodles and soda, I have clothes that barely fit me and are worn to the bone, yet I still wear them out in public… heck, my phone isn’t even on a plan. It’s a cheap pay-as-you-go that I’ve only recently started putting actual minutes on for the sake of being able to call you if I need to… I don’t know what to think…” I trail off.

Kyle is lying next to me now. I bury my head in his chest as I start to feel the tears welling up again. He wraps his arms around me in that loving embrace that sends static through me every time I feel it, and I lose my grip and start bawling into his chest.

“I guess I should stop getting your shirt all wet, huh…” I sniffle after about four minutes of me crying and Kyle just stroking my hair softly, occasionally kissing my forehead.

“It doesn’t matter. They’re your tears, so as much as I dislike you crying out of sadness, this shirt now has a part of you, so I'm never washing it… just kidding, but seriously... don’t worry about it. I’ll always be here for you no matter what.” Kyle says, making me smile despite all of the recent events.

“Now about the shopping trip… it’s 5:40 now, so if you want to, I could call Kayla for a ride and we could get some dinner somewhere, then maybe shop someplace a little less crowded. Sound alright?” Kyle asks. I’m momentarily shocked by his ability to overlook my foolishness and the fact that I embarrassed him in front of a bajillion people. He really is perfect…

“I’d love that. Are you sure it’s alright though?” I respond, still not quite over the unease of my episode.

“Of course! I already asked Kayla if she would be down with that, and she’s chill with it. By the way, I understand your point of view on the amount of money my parents gave me, but honestly, it’s a group effort present to you from my family. My aunt and uncle pitched in, too, so it’s not like we’re going broke for you… Although for you, I’d give up all the money in the world, my love.” Kyle says, smiling slightly as he lets out the last part. I feel my cheeks go a deep shade of red.

“Have I ever told you that you’re the cutest thing in the world when you blush like that?” Kyle says, at the same time pulling out his cell phone to call Kayla. She picks up.

“Hey Kayla! I was right; he was in the tree house… yeah, uh-huh. He says that it was just a bit overwhelming. I’ll explain later. For now could you come pick us up? Where to? I dunno, I’ll ask Garrett. Garrett, where do you wanna eat?” Kyle asks, looking over to me and smiling. I ponder the question for a minute, mulling over options. I’ve heard of a really romantic and fancy restaurant, but it’s expensive as heck. It’s either that or Taco Bell. I decide to go out on a limb.

“Have you heard of a restaurant called ‘The Moonlit Castle…?’” I respond, looking into his eyes as they seem to light up at this idea.

“Heck yes! I’ve never been there but I’ve heard high praise sung over it, so it’s without a doubt delicious… Kayla, we’re thinking The Moonlit Castle, k? Romantic right? I know! Thanks… Wait, you already ate? Then do you just wanna hang out while we’re there or should we have you do whatever then call you to pick us up?... Sounds good. Thanks again!” Kyle hangs up and turns to back me with a grin so bright it could’ve been a second sun.

“I take it we’re going to The Moonlit Castle then?” I inquire. He nods his head vigorously in response. The Moonlit Castle it is.
