***Chapter 4***
The whispers seemed to follow me down the hall. Instantly I became self-conscious, was it something to do with me? I highly doubted that, so what that I was wearing a skirt instead of jeans today. It had to be something else.
I turned to Annie who was unusually quiet at the moment.
"You ok?" I asked casually.
She jumped violently and turned to stare at me.
"Wha-what did you say?" she said quietly.
"I said 'are you ok?'" I repeated.
"Oh yeah, I'm fine, just a bit tired." She said hesitantly.
I pretended to buy it and turned back to the people who were whispering not so subtly. Amidst the sea of people I saw the familiar bright red hair of my best friend and she appeared before us within another person in tow. At first I couldn't see who it was, their face was covered by a mop of black hair, but only one person would almost tackle me to the ground with a bear hug.
"Chase!" I screamed in surprise. I tried to hug him back, but my hands were pinned firmly to my sides. "Ca-can't breathe Chase." I gasped.
He finally released me and as I got my breath back smiled at me lightly.
"Hey Katie, how are you?" he asked.
Now I wasn't being attacked I took a long look at him. Chase had been in China over winter vacation visiting family, which was weird because he was British. He was more tanned than before and his jet black hair had grown about five inches so you couldn't see his deep brown eyes. He had also grown and towered over me even more before. He must be over 6 foot by now.
"I'm good. How are you? I haven't seen you in so long." I whined. He chuckled.
"I'm good; China was am-a-zing!" He said in his cute accent.
Chase was mine and Emma's gay best friend. We had adopted him, not literally, when he first joined our school and we were inseparable ever since. He was the most out there person I had ever met and we loved him for it.
"Oooh who's the newbie?" he said as his eyes began to twinkle in way not dissimilar to Emma.
"This is Annie." I told him.
I probably should've warned her because I predicted what would happen before it did. Chase jumped on Annie and gave her a tighter hug than he gave me. Chase was the ultimate hugger, but he often took it too far. Annie, though, didn't freak out like me, she just hugged him back.
"It's nice to meet you. Emma and Katie have told me lots about you Chase." She lied smoothly.
I shot her a confused look, but she just sent me a 'play along with it look'.
"Ahh you guys talk about me! That's so sweet." He beamed like the sun and gave us all another bone-crushing hug.
At the end of our little encounter the whispers increased tenfold and the crowds seemed to part for a new figure walking down the hallway.
"Ok seriously can any of you tell me what they're talking about 'cause all I've heard so far is whispering and I know I'm a hot topic, but I've only been back for like ten minutes." Chase announced loudly.
We laughed at his comment and then all eyes were on Emma, our personal high school gossip channel. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed Annie had disappeared. I spun round, but couldn't see her anywhere.
"Well I haven't heard much, but all I know is that there's some new mystery bad boy gracing the halls of Carter High. He only started the other day, but he's already got a bit of a reputation." She announced proudly.
Carter High was, of course, the name of our school, but I didn't know who the new boy was. We all turned to look at the new figure walking towards us. Behind him seemed to be the entire football team and the cheerleading squad, all following him like sheep.
The boy was tall and slightly tanned. It was a natural tan as if he'd lived in the sun all his life. He was tall and his muscles were obvious even through his top. I scanned the hallway and saw almost every girl was eye-raping him.
The whole time this had been happening the boy seemed to be searching the crowds for someone. His head moved constantly and his eyes were darting from side to side. Then he looked over in my direction, our gazes caught and so did my breath. His eyes were brilliant blue, but cold and harsh as if they'd already seen too much.
His gaze lingered for a split second longer than it had anywhere else, but still it then moved on back to the large crowd.
"Is that the new guy?" I asked Emma.
She nodded at me.
"His name's Finn." She said.
Suddenly Annie reappeared by my side.
"Where have you been? You just disappeared for like ten minutes." I said.
"Oh sorry, I had to print off some work." She explained. The bell rang loudly and we traipsed off to our next lessons.
I'm back from visiting my grandparents and I almost forgot to update, but I didn't! So yeah here it is...
