I opened the door to the daycare, letting in a small army of children. I was glad there would be backup coming soon. My phone rang. I pulled it out.
"Hey Shara! How's it-"
"Min, I can't make it today." My friend sounded awful.
"Do you have a cold?"
"The flu actually, and I don't want to-" a loud sneeze sounded.
"Yeah, okay. I can take it by myself today."
"You sure? I could send over Mary.
I shuddered, "Nope, I'm good."
"Okay. Bye, Min!"
"Bye!" I hung up, and sighed. Never mind about that backup.
I went inside, only to find a small army of children waiting for me. I clapped my hands, bringing their eyes on me.
"Okay gang! This is my first day here, and so I don't know any of your names. Let's sit in a circle, and we can all play a get-to-know-you game!" The kids groaned, but reluctantly formed a circle.
"All right. I'll start. I'm Min, my favorite color is purple, and my favorite food is peanut butter. All right, why don't you go next?" The kid I pointed to gave me a deer-in-the-headlights look.
"Stand up," I said, "and tell us your name, your favorite color, and your favorite food."
The kid stood up and whispered, "My name is Hazel, my favorite color is gold, and my favorite food is lasagna!" The kid quickly sat down, and started shaking like she was going to cry. The boy next to her looked like he wanted to help, but then stood up.
"My name is Frank, my favorite color is purple, my favorite food is peach preserves." He sat down, and a few of the kids snickered. The next kid stood up, and I knew this was a kid I didn't want to mess with.
"My name is Nico, my favorite color is black, and my favorite food is pomegranates." He glared at everyone as he sat down, daring anyone to laugh. The next girl stood up, and I almost laughed at what she said.
"My name is Annabeth, my favorite color is gray, and my favorite food is a cherry smoothie." She sat down, and I thought, "What kind of kid likes smoothies?"
The next kid stood up and said, "My name is Percy, my favorite color is blue, and my favorite food is blue." All kids laughed when he sat down, and Annabeth stood back up and said, "He means that he likes any blue food." Before she could sit down, Percy stood up and whispered something in her ear. She sighed and said, "And, he says, that if blue was a food, he would eat it." They both sat down. The next kid stood up and said, "My name is Leo, my favorite color is red, and my favorite food is tacos." As he sat down, I saw a mischievous glint in his eye. I made a mental note to keep an eye on him. The next girl stood up, and I knew she meant business.
"My name is Reyna, my favorite color is silver, and my favorite food is.." She suddenly froze, and twitched. She gave me a panicked look that screamed, HELP!
I stood up and said, "That's very nice Reyna. You can sit down now." She shot me a thankful look and sat down.
The next boy stood up and said, "My name is Jason, my favorite color is yellow, and my favorite food is blueberry muffins. Or cheeseburgers." Jason and Percy high-fived before he sat down.
The last girl stood up and said, "My name is Piper, my favorite color is pink, my favorite food is French croissants." She sat down, and I sighed. Today was going to be an interesting day, to say the least.
