I knew that I would need to protect myself. Growing up in New York City, I needed to be prepared to take down a guy in a second. So, that's what I trained for. My entire life, all I remember is Martial Arts training. By the time I was 5, I could break a person's wrist with my pinky.

I spent most of my life training for danger, but even I wasn't ready when they came. It was a shock, to say the least.

In high school, I was in the in crowd, popular, but I hated every minute of it. I hated the way that the girls talked to other girls. It was degrading to know that I was "friends" with these girls that had no respect for other women. So, I left the in crowd, and met Jill and Camille: my best friends. We're invisible.

"I hate the way that they talk to you!" I said to Jill when she asked why I left the populars.

"But, they barely even talk to us anyways. We are invisible." Jill argued. "Right, Cam?"

"Yeah. Those bitches act as if we are about as fucking important as dirt! And when they do talk to us, I want to take out my gun, and shoot them in the face!" Cam yelled.

"Whoa! Cool it! Justin taught you how to shoot to defend yourself, not to shoot bitchy people! If he did, then half of the school would be dead!" I said, trying to stay calm.

I walked home to my apartment, talking the back route like I always do. Something was off. I could tell. There was no sirens, no screaming. Those sounds were basically lullabies to me. I walked around the corner of the alley, expecting some kind of homeless person to be there, waiting for someone to walk there, but there was no one. I was freaked out. What happened to everyone?

Then, I saw it. There was a man that walked straight out of the glass of the convenience store, shattering the glass. He didn't even stop walking. He walked straight into traffic. It happened so fast. I could barely register it when it happened. The sound of the breaks, the heart clenching sound of his bones cracking: it's all jumbled up in my head.

He got hit by a car, and then, walked away.

I heard every bone in his body snap, but he walked away, seemingly unharmed.

I ran towards him, trying to evaluate his injuries. I was trained in medical, too. Martial Arts is definitely not a safe hobby.

"Sir?" I called out to him. "Sir, are you okay?!"

He still kept walking.

I called 911.

"911, what's your emergency?"

"Hello. I just saw a man get hit by a car, but he walked off like nothing happened. I'm trained in medical emergencies, but he won't respond to me. It's like he's...brainwashed."

Oh, no. I couldn't believe it. There was no way that this could be happening.

"M'am? M'am, are you okay?" The dispatcher tried to get my attention through the phone, but I was occupied with the thoughts rushing around my head.

"It's the damn apocalypse." I whispered.

I rushed home, packing every essential I could need. I lived by myself, so I didn't have to worry about parents.

I heard a knock on the door. I quickly got my handgun out of my drawer, and ran to the door. I stood against the wall, my gun locked and loaded. I took the handle, quickly turning the handle, yanking it open, and pointing the gun at the person on the other end of the door.

"Whoa! Whoa!" Jill yelled, raising her hands in surrender. "Don't shoot!"

I exhaled in exasperation. "What the hell, Jilly?! I was ready to shoot you!"

"I guess you figured it out, too, huh?" She asked me, setting down her bag on my bed.

"Oh, the apocalypse?" I said. "Yeah. I saw a guy get hit by a bus, and walk it off like nothing happened, like the fucking Hulk or some shit! So, how did you find out?"

"My parents were acting strange. They were being overly nice, almost like they were different people." She said.

"Like they were brainwashed?" I asked.

"Yeah." She said.

"The guy was acting the same way." I said. "I couldn't talk to him. He wouldn't respond."

"How soon can we get out of the city?" I asked.

"If we stay on the back route, I'd say about 45 minutes." She said, doing the math in her head.

"We have to pick up Cam. If we're leaving, there's no way in hell that we're leaving her." I said.

"Agreed." She said.

"We gotta move fast." I said, grabbing my bag, picking some last minute essentials, and running out of the building with Jill in tow.

While we were walking to Cam's house, Jill and I got a text.

'I'm at city limits. Meet me here. Something weird is going on.'

Jill and I looked and each other.

"Well..." I said. "it looks like Cam knows."
