Night Run

Part 8

Brianna felt much better after dressing and brushing her hair.  The dress fit perfectly.  Thanks to the slight altering job she and the young maid Sadie had done. She felt more confident, not quite ready to face the McGregor but ready to face the day.

She had just finished her breakfast when the McGregor walked into her room.  Leaned against the hearth and waited for her to swallow her tea.

“My aren’t you a beauty.” He said admiringly.  “I see you’re ready for our little visit.”

Brianna flushed at the compliment and didn’t respond to the last part.  She sat waiting to see what would happen next.  He extended his had waiting for her to take it.  She did.  He pulled her up and tucked her arm into the crook of his and led her out of the keep.  People watched the observing as they passed.  Brianna wondered if they knew where they were headed.

They walked down a path to the cottages nestled at the bottom of the hill.  She examined the scenery trying not to engage in conversation.  Conner obviously felt the same way because nothing was said until they reached the cottages.

“If you have anything to confess, you can do it now and we can head back to the keep.” He said trying to encourage her.

“No, that won’t be necessary.”  She said looking anywhere but at him.  He grabbed her and walked or rather stalked toward a cottage nearest to the lake.

Conner walked with purpose, thinking all the while what he would do when she was proved to be a sham.  He could tell she wasn’t telling the truth.  He didn’t know why he knew it but he knew she was hiding something.

Brianna could have kicked herself.  She should have confessed when she had the chance.  Now she could be forced to tell all.  Uugh…

Conner walked to the cabin door and rapped hard.  Much too hard for the door pushed open just a little.  A large hand reached around and jerked the door open. A tall, lean, young and good looking man stepped out of the cottage.

“What the—Oh, Conner it’s you.”  He said surprised.  “What brings you here so loudly this morning?

“I have a kinswoman of your wife here and she wanted to see her.” Connor said.  Not letting on that he didn’t believe her.

“Oh, she’ll be happy for that.” He said eyeing Brianna. “She been feeling a might lonely missing her friend.”

“Well don’t just stand there, let us in or go get her.” Conner said in his lordly manner.  Apparently, the young man was used to Conner’s manner because he just grinned and ushered them in.

“Wife!” he yelled.  “Come and greet the McGregor.” He said in a loud cheerful voice.

Brianna heard rustlings behind the curtain at the far end of the cottage.  She held her breath waiting to be exposed.

“Brianna!” She yelled

Brianna glanced up at her named being yelled by the most beautiful, wonderful voice ever.

“Rorie!” Brianna yelled back and ran to her and hugged her with all her might.

“How did you get here? Where is your Mother? Where is? Rorie questioned.

“I’ll tell you all about it.” Brianna said to Rorie. She turned to Connor and said. “I told you she would vouch for me.”

Conner stood there with his mouth open.  He was so sure she would be exposed.  He never expected this tearful reunion.

“You can leave me here now.” Brianna continued

“This is a very small cottage and there is no room for you, you will continue to reside at the keep.” Connor stated with no room for argument, he thought.

“No, she can stay here, we will borrow a cot and put it in the front room.” Rorie said enthusiastically.

“I, ump think Connor is right, we don’t have much room.” Brandon said sheepishly.

“No.” Rorie said. “NO?” Brandon said.  “You’ll go against your Chief the first chance you get?

“No, that’s not true.” Rorie said looking worried.

“No, I don’t believe Rorie would do something like that.” Connor said applying the pressure.

“Oh, see don’t go trying to make her feel bad for wanting me here.” Brianna said glaring at Connor.  “I’ll continue on at the keep until other arrangements.” She said “And don’t think you bullied me into it either, I just realized they were still newlyweds and needed their privacy.”  She said with a full blush.

“Now if you gentlemen would leave us to chat, I would appreciate it.” Rorie said finally coming out of her stupor from hearing Brianna chastise the McGregor.

Brandon Grabbed his plaid and walked outside with Connor.
