Night Run
Chapter 2
Brianna began to hear noises as she got closer to the light. It sounded like there was a camp above. The voices sounded friendly enough but she didn't trust anyone at this point so she decided to hang back and wait for them to leave. It was a little after dawn and they were breaking their camp up. Hopefully Sir Charles and Atrian had given up the search for her. She knew she had to keep moving but she also knew she needed to be cautious.
"Ian, Robin, Antony you don't seem to be in a hurry to get home." Said a deep husky all male voice. "We've been gone from our keep for far too long for my taste. "He continued with a chuckle.
"Aye!" responded several loud voices.
Brianna wondered what the owner of the first voice looked like. He sounded happy. Brianna pictured a man with a happy go lucky grin and dimples. She laughed at her silliness. She knew that now was not the time and she turned her head to hear better.
Sounds of a camp being disassembled continued. As she edged closer to the opening to the tunnel she saw a group of warriors in a plaid she didn't recognize gathering their belongings and making ready to depart. As she inched forward she stumbled and fell forward with a cry. They turned and the leader a tall fiercely handsome man with a scar on his cheek rushed the tunnel to grab her. She tried to run back but was caught rather quickly. She struggled but she knew there was no escape.
"Who are you and what are you doing spying on us?" He asked harshly.
"I was not spying.' Brianna responded softly.
"From where we stand lass it looks like spying" he said
"I don't care what it looks like to you, I was not spying" Brianna
"Ok, let's pretend you weren't spying, what is your name" he said holding her arm a little tighter. He looked her over and after his perusal she felt naked. His hold on her arm began to loosen as his glance got hotter. Brianna's insides began to tingle. She had never responded to man like this before and didn't understand why her body was betraying her at such an inopportune time.
"Before you get any idea's I am a well born lass and not some village girl you can use." She said haughtily.
"And how would a well born lass be knowing such things." He said laughter in his voice.
"Check and see if there is anyone else in here." He said quickly to one of his men.
Another exceedingly tall man with blond hair and blue eyes brushed passed her to check the tunnel. He came back quickly and replied in the negative before brushing passed her on his way out.
She looked around the tall man holding her to see four other giants staring at her waiting to see what was going to happen. The all were blond, tall and muscular.
"What should we do with her?" He asked his comrades.
"Whatever your going to do you need to do it fast Conner." The one who had checked the tunnel responded.
Conner grabbed her and pulled her toward the waiting horses. "I'm not going anywhere with you let me go!" Brianna yelled
He pulled her to the horse and mounted it pulling her with him. She protested to no avail. He turned his horse around and followed his companions. Brianna sat in silence. She didn't want to go with the strangers but if she stayed she could run in to Sir Charles. Maybe she was better off going with Connor and his men for now.
They rode till dusk only stopping to water the horses. She was exhausted but she would not complain. She tried not to draw any attention to herself. But Connor had watched her the entire time, wondering what had happened to the spirited lass. Why was she wondering around alone? Should he be on alert for added danger? He shook his head and took a final glance at Brianna before he finished taking care of his mount. She quietly soothed the horse as Conner rubbed the horse down before they continued their journey.
"Well, lass what is your name? I am Connor McGregor and these are my brothers Cain, Caleb, Cori and Christopher." He said as he pointed toward the men.
"Brianna" she said softly
"What clan are you from?" he asked
Brianna sat silent not wanting to give her name in case he was on friendly terms with Sir Charles. She thought for a minute. She had a friend who was a Murray, yes, Murray sounded good. "Murray" she said quickly. He glanced at her suspiciously but didn't question her further.
"We should be on McGregor land in a few hours. I will let you keep your secrets until we are safely behind my gates. Once we are there I expect some answers." He said
