The opening in the wall closed behind them with a thump, sealing them in. Both of them jumped in fright. Zulah rushed back, trying to find a way out. He banged his fists against the wall, trying to see if there was a hidden door or something. After a few minutes' fruitless searching, he gave up. "Looks like we'll have to see this through to the end," he sighed. Eren only nodded, and motioned for Zulah to take the lead. Zulah drew his sword, and, while keeping it at the ready, sneaked down the tunnel to where he could see the strange green light, flickering invitingly. Eren copied Zulah's movements, and the duo sneaked, quiet as the night.
They had been sneaking for quite a few minutes, when Zulah unexpectedly paused and turned to Eren. "Say, it doesn't look like that light is coming any closer, does it?" He asked Eren. Eren frowned. "Are you sure?" He peered intently at the light. "Yeah, you're right." He turned to Zulah, intending to ask him something, but stopped as he saw the intent look on Zulah's face. Zulah was pacing up and down, his sword resting on his shoulder, his brows furrowed in a frown of fierce concentration.
Suddenly, without warning, he whipped his sword of his shoulder and started attacking the walls of the tunnel. He made a great, horizontal swipe with his sword, putting all his strength into that single blow. Eren cringed in anticipation of the echoing ringing that would accompany the sound of the blade hitting the rock, but, to his utter astonishment, the blade passed right through. He gaped at Zulah. Zulah grinned at him while setting the sword down on his shoulder. "Now we'll see what really is going on here."
The walls of the tunnel started fading away, the illusion shattered by Zulah's attack. Eren gasped, and then gulped. He went to stand next to Zulah, and together they prepared to face the challenge they assumed awaited them. The sight that greeted them made Zulah's knees week, and Eren could barely keep standing up, for there, staring down at them with its bright green eyes, was the moher of all dragons. It was positively huge. Eren had thought the messenger was large, but this dragon was easily twice as big. The dragon was covered with great gold and red scales, shimmering in the light that fell from above. When it spoke, the world shook and crashed with the roar of its voice.
Eren and Zulah were completely paralyzed with fear, both of them having fallen to their knees, for they knew the futility of resistance. They wouldn't make it out of this alive. Zulah turned to Eren. "Well, it was nice knwing you," he said with a slight grin. Eren grimaced. "Now, of all times, you decide to make a joke?! Do you know how mu..." He was suddenly interrupted by a mighty roar of the dragon. "Silence!" It said, its voice echoing around the area. Zulah shrugged. If they were about to die, he might as well die making fun of the dragon, so he said, "Um, mister dragon sir, could you please try and be a little less loud? All this shouting and roaring is making my head hurt." The dragon looked completely taken aback at this.
It suddenly flicked its tail and zoomed in on Zulah. "Insolent little human. I know you only act this brave because you fear for your life." At this, Zulah gulped. "However, since you saw through my illusion, you will be spared." Eren and Zulah both slaked a heartfelt sigh of relief at this. The dragon turned around and started walking away, towards a large, carved mural. "Follow me, humans," it said.
The duo hesitated, but then followed obediently. "Why have you brought us here, Mr. dragon?" Zulah asked politely. The dragon only grunted. Upon their arrival at the mural, the dragon stopped. "You," it pointed at Zulah with its tail. "Step onto the altar." Zulah frowned as he looked around him. "What altar?" he prompted. As if waiting for his question, the ground in front of him opened up, and up rose an altar, engraved with many strange symbols. Zulah was completely and utterly puzzled by this. He looked towards the dragon, whose eyes seemed to glow a bit brighter. With a shrug of his shoulder, he stepped onto the altar.
What happened next came as a total surprise to him. The dragon opened its mouth, looking like it wanted to say something, but instead of words, a mighty blast of blue flame blasted towards Zulah. He closed his eyes and screamed. He screamed and screamed until his throat was raw and he could scream no more. He opened his eyes, looking straight into Eren's amused smirk.
"Wh...what happened?" He asked, his teeth chattering in fright. Eren motioned towards where the dragon was. To Zulah's surprise, the dragon was on its knees, its gaze resting on Zulah. "What did you just do?" Zulah demanded of the dragon. The dragon blinked twice, and then answered. "So it is true. Another has come."
"What are you talking about?"
"Another of the Warriors. You are of dragon blood, young one."Zulah was stupefied. "You mean, I've got the blood of a dragon?!" The dragon shook its head. "Not quite. You are something extremely rare. The last of your kind was last seen over a millennia ago." Zulah frowned. "And what exactly am I, if you would be so kind?"
The dragon paused, letting the moment drag on. Whether it was intentional or not, only the dragon would know. "You are a Dragon Warrior. Blessed with the ability to harness the magic and power of the dragons, and use it as you see fit."Zulah gasped, the whole world slowing down around him. "S...So I can use like, dragon magic? Like breathe fire and stuff?" The dragon shook its head again. "It is not that simple. There are three different types of dragons. Lightning, Ice, and Fire. You will be able to use spells that only dragons can do, but only of one of those elements. I am a fire dragon, as you might have guessed. Let me give a demonstration of my power."
With that, the dragon took off, leaping upwards and flying straight into the air. Both Zulah and Eren's eyes followed the dragon, amazed. The dragon dived, attacking a large boulder with almighty power. Its first attack appeared small as it left its mouth, but when it struck, the tiny ball of fire exploded with so much force that Zulah was thrown backwards, off of the altar. When he looked back at where the boulder was, there was only a smoking crater. The dragon landed next to him. Zulah turned to it. "That...was...AMAZING! When do I learn how to do that?"
The dragon shook it head. "That was an extremely advanced level spell, and it took me half of my life to perfect it."
Zulah refused to be fazed. "Well then, how old are you?"
"Three thousand four hundred and ninety two winters." The dragon replied solemnly.
Zulah blanched at hearing this. "Well, then. We better get started," he said, though the excitement had left him."First, we have to identify your class, be it Ice, Fire or Lightning. Step onto the altar, cut your hand and let the blood flow over the rune in the middle." Zulah did just that, letting his blood drip over the rune, completely covering it. What happened next can only be described as amazing. On three sides of the altar, the three elements burst out of the floor, one on each side of the altar, except where Zulah stood. The elements shot into the sky, intertwining, twirling above Zulah. He could only stare in wonder. The swirling tornado of fire, lightning and ice reached a climax, and then shot downwards at Zulah. He could only stare as the elements hit the altar, exploding outwards, all three elements hitting his body and entering him, through his skin.
Then it was over. Everything returned to normal, and Zulah looked at the dragon in expectation. What he didn't expect to see was the dragon, kneeling before him, its head low to the ground.
"What is the meaning of this?" He demanded. The dragon rose. Its eyes were glittering fiercely, and its scales looked like it was on fire. When it spoke, it was with reverence in its voice. "You are Pahverin, master of all three elements. This is the first time in the known history that such a thing occurred. Never before has there been one who could control all elements. Until now. You are the first. What this mean, I do not know. What I do know, is that there lies a great journey ahead of you."
Before Zulah could process this information and ask a question, the dragon spoke again. "Farewell now, young one. I must inform the others. You will learn to control this power on your journey. When the time is right, a man will find you, and teach you everything you need to know. May swift winds carry you." With that, the dragon leapt up and sped away, leaving Zulah to reply with a surprised "And you."
Another door, edges tinged with green, opened before them, and through it, they could see their camp. Neither of the two teenagers spoke for a while, their minds too full with what just happened. After the pause, Zulah spoke. "We'll test the dragon's theory tomorrow. For now, let's get some rest." He turned in without another word, but sleep eluded him deep into the night. He was too busy with his own thoughts to notice the pair of red eyes that had been spying on them since their first meeting with a dragon.
