DAY THREE – THE GAMES BEGIN

Alfie rolled over and opened his eyes. He looked around the room sleepily for any sign of what time it was. All at once the memories of the day before came flooding back to him. He sat bolt upright in a panic. Today’s the day, he told himself, the day The Games begin. He got out of bed and made his way to the main living area. Upon entering the room, he noticed the white suits that were laid out. These must be the death suits, he thought. They were almost identical to the ones the nurses were wearing and he wondered if they were hostages too. Each of them was topped with a card, one for him and one for Carrie. Carrie. He worried about how she was holding up. Last night when the nurses came, her nurse had to drag her away kicking and screaming. He shuddered at the memory of it, while remembering his own nurse pinning him to his bed. Their strength frightened him, almost as much as what lie ahead. He felt bad for Carrie and tried to imagine what she must be going through; having to enter this horrible situation with the person you love. He walked to her door and knocked softly.

“Go away.” A muffled voice said from the other side.

“Carrie? Carrie, it’s Alfie. Look I just want to make sure you’re okay and t-…” He never got to finish. The door flew open and he was met with a furious, puffy eyed Carrie. It was obvious to him that she had been crying. He casually wondered how much sedation they had to give her last night to calm her down.

“Okay? OKAY? Please tell me Alfie, how am I possibly supposed to be okay?” She screamed at him. Alfie backed up a few steps and held his hands up as a sign of surrender.

“Whoa, Carrie, I’m sorry. I just know that you’ve been having a difficult time and I-“ She cut him off again mid-sentence.

“I’d say I’ve been having a little bit more than a difficult time. Do you have any idea what it’s like Alfie? Any idea at all? Alex and I were supposed to be together! We were going to get married one day and now…now…” She trailed off, overtaken by sobs. She crumpled to the floor and shook with the force of her pain.

“How can I possibly go on knowing that no matter what, one of us won’t make it? Hell, we both probably won’t make it! Oh my god, Alfie what am I going to do? I can’t do this I can’t do this! I can’t murder my friends! DO YOU HEAR ME, I CAN’T DO THIS!” She hugged her knees to her chest and rocked back and forth, drowning the world out with her cries.

Ever since she met Alex, the only thing she could think about was their future together. They had recently started talking about moving and getting married next year, but now all of her plans and her future were being cruelly taken away from her. She was helpless and weak, and couldn’t find the strength to go on, knowing in the end it wouldn’t matter. How was this even legal? How long has this been going on? Were we all just blind to this happening around us? She thought. She put her forehead down to knees and continued rocking. Alfie was sweet enough, but she just couldn’t bear the thought of a world without Alex in it, and the last thing she wanted was for someone to ask her if she was okay. Deep in her heart she knew she’d never be okay again, and by the end of the day she’d most likely be dead.

A coldness swept over her and she got to her feet, rubbing her eyes. She looked at Alfie, who looked back at her worriedly.

“I’m sorry.” She said flatly, all the previous emotion had gone out of her face. Alfie wondered to himself if she had broken, if she had given up.

“Hey look, it’s okay.” He ran his fingers through his hair, unsure of what to say to her now. He motioned behind him and said, “Suits are here. Despite what they’re for, can’t deny that they look bloody fantastic.” He walked over and picked up the suit meant for him. The fabric felt like soft armor, and he casually ran his hand across the fabric soaking in the texture. The card fluttered to the floor and he bent down to pick it up.

“Greetings Alfie.” He read aloud. “Here you’ll find your suit. This suit has been specifically designed to meet your proportions. Please put this on and wait for the guards to escort you to the main Game Center. Good luck. Let the games begin!” He dropped the card and let it fall back to the ground soundlessly. He glanced up at Carrie who was reading her own note to herself.

“Mine says the same.” She stated, her eyes never leaving the paper. “I guess we should change…” She turned and walked out of the room, trailing her suit behind her. Any trace of the old Carrie seemed to have disappeared into the floor, along with her tears.

It felt like hours had passed before they heard a loud knock on their door. Carrie and Alfie had been sitting on the couch in silence, neither of them bothered to eat any of the breakfast that had been set out for them. Despite everything, they both found they didn’t have an appetite and most importantly, didn’t trust the food. The door opened to reveal two guards who stood silently waiting for them. Just as they were leaving their room Carrie grabbed his wrist and turned to him.

“Hey Alfie?” She said quietly, so the guards wouldn’t hear. “Can you do me a favor?”

“Sure, Carrie what is it?”

“Don’t kill Alex.” She dropped his wrist and exited the room, leaving a heavyhearted Alfie to trail behind her.

In the hall more guards, who were escorting the other twenty-two YouTubers down to the main Game Center, joined them. Everyone had the same look of worry and sadness, though a few had a look of fierce determination. One of these was Philly D, known to the world as Phillip DeFranco. He walked stoically, staring straight ahead of him, his face hiding any hints of emotion. The others around him worried about the threat he would present to them later, and whether or not he was capable of actually murdering them.

At the end of the hall they reached a large service elevator. The guards ushered everyone inside before pressing an outside button that led them down to the main Game Center. The doors closed and they were alone. Countless floors down, when the elevator finally reached the bottom, the doors opened to reveal twenty-four numbered platforms. The YouTubers piled out and looked around confusedly muttering to each other about what to do next.

HELLO AGAIN, YOUTUBERS. A familiar voice rang out. AS I’M SURE YOU’VE NOTICED, HERE YOU WILL FIND INDIVIDUAL PLATFORMS THAT HAVE BEEN NUMBERED ONE THROUGH TWENTY-FOUR. IT WILL GO AS FOLLOWS; TEAM ONE WILL OCCUPY PLATFORMS ONE AND TWO. TEAM TWO WILL OCCUPY PLATFORMS THREE AND FOUR AND SO ONE AND SO FORTH. PLEASE TAKE YOUR PLACES NOW.

Everyone scrambled to find his or her assigned platform. When everyone was settled they looked around nervously, waiting for their next instructions. It was happening. The Games were really beginning.

EXCELLENT. IN JUST A FEW MOMENTS THESE PLATFORMS WILL DESCEND INTO THE MAIN GAME CENTER. ONCE YOU ARE THERE THE GAMES WILL BEGIN. THERE ARE VARIOUS WEAPONS SCATTERED THROUGHOUT THE CENTER AS WELL AS FOOD AND MEDICAL ITEMS, SHOULD YOU NEED IT. AS I MENTIONED BEFORE, EVERY DAY A POLL WILL BE TAKEN AND THE TOP THREE WILL RECEIVE SOME SORT OF AID, TO BE DETERMINED. ALSO AS STATED, YOU WILL HAVE FIVE DAYS TO FIND A VICTOR AND SHOULD A VICTOR NOT BE FOUND, I WILL INTERVENE AND FIND ONE FOR YOU, THOUGH I HOPE IT DOESN’T COME TO THAT. GOOD LUCK AND LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Moments later the platforms came to life and began their descent into the darkness. The YouTubers shuffled around nervously, anticipating the stop. They travelled down what felt like miles; the only comfort was the cold, slick walls pressing in around them. When at last, the platforms shuddered to a stop; they found themselves completely surrounded by darkness, cut off from the people around them by the penetrating walls. Moments ticked by, the air growing thicker with tension. They started to wonder if they’d ever be let out. Some hoped this was just an elaborate prank that was ending. All across the platforms the YouTubers were poised and ready to run. An air horn sounded out and the wall in front of them came up, revealing a landscape that burned with harsh light. Disoriented, the YouTubers scrambled out and The Game Center erupted in chaos.
