Hart stood up and backed away from Carrie, dropping the rock with a thud. Alex was advancing on her, his hammer raised high above his head.
“Alex you don’t have to do this. Lets just grab Carrie and go.” Charlie pleaded. He tried grabbing him by the shoulders but Alex wouldn’t budge.
“Why’d you do it?” Alex demanded, his face red with anger.
“Are you serious? She had a scythe! She was going to kill ME!” Hart screamed back, starting to panic. She silently cursed herself for dropping her only means of defense.
“Alex, please!” Charlie yelled, trying his best to diffuse the situation. “She’s not dead! Aren’t you paying attention? There was no horn!” Alex paused and looked away for a moment, realization spreading across his face. He turned back to Hart and the anger instantly reappeared.
“She attacked her, Charlie! She deliberately and violently smashed her head in with a rock! You saw her do it and you want me to show her mercy?!” Alex yelled back at his friend. Hart continued to retreat, her hands held up in front of her. Her back smacked into something and she jumped, spinning on her heels. Alex and Charlie circled around to stand in front of her, now it was three on one.
“Hey Alfie.” Alex said without taking his eyes off Hart. “This one here decided it would be fun to attack Carrie from behind and smash her head in with a rock. Would you like to help me teach her a lesson?”
“I’d love to.” Alfie replied emotionlessly. Charlie stared at his two friends in disbelief. Some small part of him had hoped no one would actually play along with this game. He thought his friends were better than this.
“Y-You guys can’t be serious!” Charlie stammered. He backed away from them, not wanting any part of it.
Behind Hart, Carrie was regaining consciousness. She wiped the blood out of her eyes and lifted herself up onto her knees. Her head was swimming and she lurched forward, catching herself before she collapsed. Her hand found the discarded scythe and wrapped around it as she pulled herself to her feet. She turned around to see Hart’s back to her. Alex and Alfie were inching closer to her as Charlie stood off in the distance, his face a mask of shock. Carrie willed herself to move forward, the dizziness threatening to turn her stomach. After a few staggering steps she managed to steady herself and raised the scythe above her head. Hart was just inches away from her now.
“This is payback, bitch.” Carrie spat, swinging the scythe down. The blade went through Hart’s neck cleanly. Everyone stood shell-shocked as Hart’s head flew, landing on the ground a few feet away. Her body stood standing for half a second, before sagging sideways and slumping to the ground. Carrie wiped Hart’s blood from her face and dropped her hands to her side. The familiar sound of the air horn echoed through the air, startling everyone back to reality.
HART OF HARTBEATS IS NOW DEAD
Alex dropped the hammer and ran forward, sweeping Carrie up in an embrace. He inhaled her scent as he buried his face in her hair.
“I missed you so much Carrie.” He said so only she could hear. Carrie returned the embrace, dropping the scythe in the process.
“I never thought I’d see you again, Alex.” She murmured back. He grabbed her upper arms and held her back so they were face to face.
“I promised you I’d find you, Carrie. I meant it. You’re my entire world.”
“I love you so much, Alex. I’d be dead right now if it wasn’t for you. Oh god Alex, she almost killed me!”
