Chapter 3
*Zoey's POV*
I sat in my backyard, teaching Oliver some new tricks. Being Wednesday, my parents were at work and Shane had classes at the community college. After his classes, Shane has to work the afternoon shift at Yogurt Land, so I was all alone today.
"C'mon Oliver, roll over!" I say, waving a dog treat in the air.
'Standing in line to see the show tonight, And there's a light on, Heavy glow, By the way, I tried to say I'd be there... Waiting for' sounded my ring tone, the amazing, 'By The Way' by Red Hot Chili Peppers, one of my favorite bands. I pull out my iPhone, reading the caller ID labeled 'Wes'.
"H-hey Wes! What's up?" I say as I feed Oliver his treat for doing the treat right.
"Hey Zoey! I was just wondering if you were busy 'cause I am really bored."
"Dude, A, you can call me Zo, Zoey just sounds too formal coming from a friend, and B, I'm not busy, just playing with Oliver."
"Oh cool! Um, can I come over and then we can go to the dog park and then get some lunch? I mean, we don't have to, only if you want to," he said nervously.
"Yeah that'd be cool.'
"Okay. Great, I'll be right over," he says, the sigh of relief clear in his voice.
"Oh and Wes?" I ask before the line goes dead.
"Yeah babe?"
"Don't be so nervous when you ask me to go places. With my boring life, I will most likely say yes to wherever you want to go," I laugh.
"Haha! Okay, I should be over in about five.'
"Kay, see ya!" I say before I end the call. I run upstairs to my room and grab my Batman SnapBack and BatGirl phone case to match with my Batman tank top. I slip on some black Adidas high tops and go back downstairs. As I plop down on the couch, I open the Instagram app. After a couple minutes of scrolling through my news feed and liking photos and videos, there is a knock at the door. I get up and head to the door, still reading a long comment. I open the door just as I finish reading. Wesley stands there, board in hand, and examining my outfit.
"I see you like Batman," he chuckles.
I look at his outfit, only to realise he is also wearing a Batman shirt and SnapBack. "I could say the same to you." He pulls out his phone and it has the same case. "Dude, we have have the same case! I love Batman! He is awesome! Batman is totally my favorite super hero," I laugh.
He pulls up his camera app and switches it to video. He presses the button to put it on front camera. He then walks over to the table and sets the phone down before pressing record. He then walks back to me.
"What are you doing?" I laugh.
"Well, I want a picture & it doesn't have a timer and I can't take it myself, I will take a video an then screen shot the pose to make a picture," he says as if it were the most obvious thing.
"Okay, whatever you say," I laugh. With that he slips his arm around my waist, me following his actions. We hold the pose for about five seconds to make sure he has enough so he can capture the screen shot. We then brake apart, me going to put Oliver on his leash, Wes going to grab his phone.
As we walk out the door, Wes has his nose in his phone. "Hey Zo, what's your instgram name?" he asks.
"Uhm, @ZoBaby09," I say, confusion leaking through my voice. He doesn't say anything. A few minutes later, just after Wes puts his phone away, my phone buzzes. I pull it out and see an Instagram notification. I open up Instagram to see that Wes has mentioned me in the picture. the caption read,'@wesleystromberg: @ZoBaby09 Copy my style much? Nah jk!!! Me & my twinny!! #twinning #TeamBatman'.
I look up from my phone and smile at Wes. "Really, Wes? #twinning? You're such a dork," I laughed.
"Hell yeah, babe! We are after all twinning today."
"Do you call every girl 'babe', or just me?"
"Just you. Why does it make you uncomfortable? I can stop," he said with panic and concern in his brown eyes.
''No, I'm perfectly comfortable. I was just wondering if I was the only lucky girl that got your attention that gets to be called babe."
"Oh, okay," Wes said, sighing in relief. We skated the rest of the way to the dog park in silence.
*Wes's POV*
Once we got to the dog park, Zoey took off with Oliver. I watched her play with her dog like he was her best friend. She played fetch with him, ran him through the obstacles, and made him do some tricks. After ten minutes, Zoey came back, letting Oliver play with the other dogs. She sat down next to me- I had been sitting under a tree while watching her- with a smile on her beautiful face.
"Your just so cool about playing with him and making sure he gets exercise. You are like the best dog owner I know," I laughed. She beamed at my comment, her smile making her look like she just won the lottery.
"When I was little, I always wanted a puppy. For my sixteenth birthday, my parents got me Oliver, since I didn't want a Sweet Sixteen. But they said that I had to take care of him, train him, and clean up his messes. My parents aren't home a lot because of work and Shane has a ton of classes at HBCC (* A/N IDK if that is really a college, I just made it up*) and he takes a bunch of shifts at Yogurt Land, so Oliver is like my only family when everybody's gone," she said.
"Well, I'm glad you have someone to keep you company. And your taking such good care with him," I mused, putting my arm around her shoulders and pulling her into my side.
"We should probably get going if we want to get to a good restaurant with outside seats," she sighed as she stood up. She walked over to Oliver and slipped on his leash. I stood as she walked my way. We walked out of the dog park when she caught up with me.
"How 'bout we go to the Sugar Shack (*A/N this is an actual restaurant in Huntington Beach. They have the best pancakes*)? They have great food and outside seating," I suggested.
"Yeh, that sounds great." We skated there, idly talking about random things. we sat down at a table and looked over the menu. just after the waitress brought out our food, her phone rang. Not very surprising that her ring tone was Red Hot Chili Peppers. She stood up apoligizing, saying she had to take the call. She walked a few steps away, just barely staying in my hearing range.
"Hello... I'm at the Sugar Shack with Wes and Oliver... We went to the dog park and decided to get lunch... Shane, I'm seventeen, I can handle myself. You wouldn't be acting like this if I was alone at the skate shop... I know Shane... I can handle myself, Shane... No, Shane, you listen. You are overreacting! We are just friends and I know how to defend my boundaries. Fuck Shane, It's nice to know you trust your one sister who has never had a friend. Jesus Shane, can't you see that I'm trying to enjoy the fact that someone isn't afraid to hang out with a skater freak! We can't all be Mr. Popular like you were in high school! Just fuck off Shane!" And with that she hung up and came back to the table.
"Everything alright, babe?" I asked concerned yet somewhat knowing the situation.
"Yeah. SHane just freaked out when he got home and I wasn't there," she sighed. We finished the meal in silence. I payed the bill even after she protested. As we skated up her driveway, i sighed and asked her, "You gonna be okay by yourself facing Shane or do you want me to come with you?"
"I'll be fine. Thanks though, for everything. I had a lot of fun today," Zoey smiled.
"Okay, babe. Call me if you need anything," I said, bending down to kiss her cheek. As my lips brushed he skin, I could feel he smile widen. I pulled back smiling at the fact.
"Okay. I will. Bye Wes!" she called over her shoulder as she went up to her front door.
"Bye, babe! Text you later!" I called asshe disappeared through her door.
