*Chase Lancaster*
The sudden warmth that spread through me, just as I took hold of her hand and gestured her out of the limo, was enough to melt my bones. I genuinely felt great. It really was amazing to be nice, just for a change.
Once she was out besides me, I found it hard to resist hugging her—for I just did something totally out of my heart. Asked her to the Masquerade which meant we weren’t going to divorce at least for the next three weeks. I almost hugged her when I noticed people around us staring our way, passing scathing looks to us, especially towards the lock of our hands.
“Did we do something?” Arianna whispered beside me, her body tensed.
“Not that I recall…” I ran my glance around, catching a few of them quickly looking away. What could’ve got them to stare at us like that? I never get stares –not of shocked surprise.
“Maybe it’s because we’re holding hands?” she suggested in whisper.
“It’s not a sin. We’re married.” I firmed my grip but I could feel she had tensed even more. Suddenly I felt the impulse of shooing everyone away and hold Arianna till comfort. Skipping the thoughts of shooing or comforting, I started walking, still hold her hand tightly and ignored the stares that followed us till we were in. for the very first time, they made me nervous.
This better have some good reason! I don’t like being stared at except out of admiration.
Arianna suddenly snatched her hand out of mine, turning around to face me when we were in a fairly deserted corridor.
“Now I know it’s not just us against our marriage, they’ve got a problem too.” She rolled her eyes, sighing.
“And who cares about them?” I frowned, mentally strangling people whose faces I remembered vaguely.
She gaped at me for a minute before I saw a ting of pink touch her cheeks. Don’t know why I suddenly felt tenderness spreading through me. The tenderness didn’t last too long as I saw Gage McCarthy walking towards us.
“Chase…” as he moved closer I saw a disgruntled expression on his face as he eyed me and Arianna. What was wrong with everyone? “Hey, Ari—” he flashed a quick smile at her and I glared at him for calling Arianna just Ari. But he just ignored me, and continued talking to her. “If you don’t mind, can I borrow him for a minute?” he asked impatiently.
“By all means.” She passed him a worried grin and walked away. I know she was still confused about my sudden good behavior and the surprising stares from everyone.
Except for the latter, I knew I was right at being good. She deserved more that what I had given her all this time we were together. And how had I realized it? Ever since I experienced the pang at the thought of losing her, it just dawned at me that if we are to end… it should rather be on good terms.
“Did I miss something last night?” Gage raised his eyebrow, watching me curiously. “I was pretty sure I left you both fighting but I never thought it would go this far!”
“Go what far?”
“Wha— Chase!” Gage said irritably. “Did you read today’s paper?”
“You know I don’t.” I shrugged carelessly.
“But you sure find a way to get yourself in every now and then!” he hissed, tossing the paper in my hands. “Here, enjoy this.”
I hadn’t been able to take my next breath when suddenly all the air sucked out of my lungs, leaving them dry and wrenched. For several moments after I read the words, I couldn’t concentrate on what to make of them and when I did, blinding rage and fury had the best of me.
