❝ and i wonder when i’ll finally stop having things to be sorry about. ❞ - i heart you, you haunt me, lisa schroeder

she finds her way to the top of her apartment building at a time where it's too early to be up, because the sun hasn't even risen yet, so why is she up before the sun?
there's a breeze; it ruffles her night shirt, and makes her hair do a slow dance. her eyes are drawn to the city lights in the distance, making her dark world so bright and it gives her an inkling of a feeling she wants to call hope.
she sits on the ledge facing east, legs tucked slightly to her right. usually she's afraid of heights, but the sun is finally rising and there's only one word running through her mind.
beautiful.
and it isn't until much later, when she's back in the walls of her room, that she thinks of the first time he called her that.

he finds himself walking the same path they always did when going to the park. it's six in the afternoon, the sun is right in front of him, and he pictures himself running towards it.
he wants to catch it before it sets, but he knows it's no use. he'd be going on forever and forever, but the feeling of wanting to try is evident in him. instead he leans on their tree (he guesses it's not really theirs anymore), and traces over the carving 'rise and set.'
he wasn't there to watch the sunrise, but he found himself still tracing it as his eyes never left the setting sun.
afterwards, he walks back, the feeling of the bark beneath his fingers still there, but the hollow feeling in his chest, he realizes,
isn't as deep anymore.
