Chapter six

Brynn •

The door is flung open. Lucas stands there in washed out jeans and a band shirt.

"Mackenzie," he gives her a nod and a smile. "Brynn." He continues. When he says my name he rolls his eyes.

"We need your help."

"Of course you do." He sighs, rolling his eyes again.

Lucas and I have a purely work based relationship. Both of us are police brats and so ended up spending a lot of time together.

Now though he turns back to Mackenzie.

"I'm sorry for your loss. If there's anything I can do..." He tails off.
Mackenzie meets his gaze and holds it.

"Thank you," She whispers. "But that's actually why we came. Um Brynn do you want to tell him?"

I nod and Lucas almost reluctantly looks away from Kenzie to focus on me instead. I'd be lying if I said this didn't annoy me.

"We need your help to break into the police archives." I state.

"And why should I help you do that?" He asks me lazily.

"Do you want the short version or the long version?"

"Short."

"Maddie Ziegler's death wasn't and accident."

"No shi-"

"Language! You knew?"

"I have a brain Brynn!"

"We think something like it has happened before and we need to find out what it was. Will you help us or not?"

"I'm all in."
