Queen Of Hearts [under editing]

Chapter eight

Brynn •

"You know it might not be a serial killer." Lucas comments. "Seeing as there's only been one death." He glances worryingly over his shoulder at Mackenzie who is trailing behind us.

"Let the game begin." I quote. "Sounds like Maddie-" I wince as I talk about her death so casually,
"-Was just the start." I finish.

Lucas nods and we walk the rest of the way in silence.
"Here." I say flatly. Mackenzie has caught up with us now.

"Which file is 64?" She asks.

"This one." Lucas says as he pulls it from the shelf.

"Who's reading aloud?" Kenzie asks.

"Reading aloud?" Lucas mimics.

"I will." I volunteer.
Mackenzie has a very small form of dyslexia. Especially when she's stressed she finds it difficult to read. I'm used to reading stuff out to her when she's struggling.

I clear my throat and begin.
"Elizabeth Wayland was admitted to the local mental institution due to her erratic and strange behavior. Less than a month later the killings began. Elizabeth targeted her fellow patients and often mutilated their bodies after death. After incriminating evidence was found against her Elizabeth was moved to regular hospital due to her condition. The rest of her life was lived out in prison."

There is silence for about half a minute and then Kenzie speaks. "Well, that was an anticlimax."

Lucas snorts and nods. I can't help but grin at her.
"People get murdered and you call it an anticlimax! Kenz, this Elizabeth killed a bunch of people!"

"I was more referring to the complete lack of detailed information and cold, hard facts!" She retorts with a smile.
"Have you been watching CSI again?" I reply.

Lucas interrupts before Kenz can take our conversation further.
"She is right Brynn. There's hardly any details in the report! I'm guessing this was written when records of this kind weren't that common here."

Kenz shrugs and I nod. I hand the file back to Lucas who places it back on the shelf. We all head back to the main doors leading out of the Archives. I nearly jump out of my skin when Frank, the guy on the front desk bursts through them.

"Lucas! Brynn, Mackenzie! They've found another body!"
