Maya's POV

Wednesday

"Riley, when are you coming home?"

"I already told you, our honeymoon ends in a week."

"Did you at least buy me some gelato? They say that the Spanish make the best ice cream."

"Maya, gelato is Italian. How many times have I told you that I'm in Italy, with Lucas."

"Whatever."

"How's Charlie?"

"He survived. The doctors back here in Los Angeles are still keeping him in the hospital, and I'm not allowed to see him."

"Maya...what did you do?"

"I sent him a parcel."

"What was in the parcel?"

"An exploding cheese soufflé."

Riley chuckles, and I can hear Lucas whispering huskily in the background.

She hangs up, and turn to greet a very small girl covered in eggs.

"We were trying to help you cook!" Luke says innocently, batting his eyelashes. I sigh, dump my children into the bathtub, and head off to find the mop.

Suddenly, the doorbell rings.

"Charlie." I breathe a sigh of relief, and crumple into his arms. His eyes are a picture of sadness, and dark black shadows obscure his eyes.

Then, he utters four words that makes my heart stop.

"I have brain cancer."
