Chapter 1

I sit on the couch of Dahvie’s house in silence. I do not want to be talked to, bother with, or even looked at. I want no attention from anyone. I am afraid to make a single movement since the incident of nearly losing my life, again.

If you happen to stumble upon my life story now, let me fill you in.

The name is Lara Devereaux. A tall beauty I can be, but I can also be your absolute worst nightmare. Depends on how well you treat me. I have not been treated very well the past few years. Especially last year.

It has exactly been one year since I have had my last near death experience. I haven’t left my home much because everybody thinks that I am dead. No one except Dahvie, Demona and Madelyn know that I still exist. Dahvie has helped me much since the awful experience.

If you are new to my life and wondering about the terrible event, let me tell you myself.

I had a friend who played with Dahvie‘s heart. Her boyfriend was a werewolf and Dahvie is a fallen angel. I am a vampire. She is a hunter. Anyway, she made a whole scene with them both breaking up with her, she acted sad, and I believed it. Later on, she told me that she had found her lover, Jake, hung from the ceiling fan because he couldn’t live without her love. He left a note. . . You know how it goes.

I had comforted her while her turmoil, but remember that this was all an act. While I had her in my arms, she had stabbed me with a stake, nearly taking my life. I think I had died, but I’m not too sure. I replay the scene in my mind daily.

I reach for Rebecca. She pulls me with her into a bright area. She smiles and hugs my body. I return her hug willingly. A frown suddenly crosses her face.

“Lara, you can’t leave yet.”

I blink a few times to register what she had just said. “But I am safe here. I want to stay safe now.”

“You time has not come. You need to complete your quest.”

“Quest?”

“The elements will help you complete it. When the time is finally right, all will fail and you will be the victor. Trust me and trust the elements. I will always help to guide you now, but when the actual fun starts, you are on your own.”

“So what do I do now?”

She caresses my face. A single tear falls from her eye. “You must go and protect those who you love. Stay undercover though. No one can know that you are going to be alive.”

She kisses my forehead and I see her no more. I flash back to my surroundings in the bathroom with a figure coming my way and shouting. Madeline appears and yanks the stake out of my back. Demona is with her. They roll me on my back and I wince at the pain. Demona puts her hands on my chest and chants. I feel my insides mend back together. She had been calling the elements to help with my healing. I black out after the relief.

I shutter at the memory that has crossed my mind. Madeline and Demona have visited off and on, but they respected my need for space. The only person I really trusted was Dahvie. He had never done anything to hurt me once. He was an angel. Please excuse the pun.

I play with my long black hair when Dahvie walks into the room. He sits down next to me and kisses my cheek.

“I want to help you with something,” He says. “Maybe make you step out of your comfort zone slightly.”

“How much out of my zone?”

“Making you public.” I begin to stop him, but he beats me to it. “I know you don’t want to do that, but you need to have some type of social life.
