Chapter Two
*3 years later*
I remember it was the summertime when I encountered my dad once again. Grandma used to let me stay up until 10 o’clock watching cartoons since there wasn’t school the next day. It made up for me not being able to play outside with the other kids, since we lived in a bad section of town. Sometimes I would use that to my advantage and she’d let me stay up until 10:30.
But on this night, I wish I had gone to bed at 10.
The semi-new episode of Rugrats had just finished playing, and Grandma was just pulling the satin sheets up on my little body. I was ranting to her about how much I just couldn’t stand Angelica or something stupid like that - when there was a knock at the door.
We never got visitors much, as Granny wasn’t friends with any of the neighbors. She was always nervous they’d come rob her, although she didn’t have much. So to get a knock at the door so late at night startled her, and most importantly, startled me.
“I’ll be right back, dear. Stay here,” She whispered before making her way out of my bedroom. There was silence for a little while, and that had my disturbing thoughts going. I always jumped to the worst case scenario, but unfortunately, what was about to happen was much, much worse.
There was a creak, signaling the door opening, then after that came the sound of footprints. It wasn’t moments after before a booming voice spoke, “Where the hell is she?”
“You’re not supposed to be here,” My grandmother’s voice shook as the intruder continued making his way through the small house.
“How about you don’t tell me what to do? Now are you going to help me or not? Where is Evalina?” He spat. His words were very slurred. In my 8 years I had met quite a few drunk people to know this man was highly intoxicated.
“I’m not going to tell you, we have a restraining order against you. Either you leave my household or I will call the cops,” Granny threatened.
“If you don’t tell me where my daughter is, I will kill you before the cops even show up.” It hit me like a train; then and there. The man was my father. I wasn’t going to let him hurt my grandmother the way he hurt my mother. So as the adrenaline pumped through my body, I made my way to face the horrendous man.
I don’t know what I was thinking in that moment, I wasn’t thinking. I had created an expectation that a little 4’6 girl in princess PJ’s could take on a 6’ man - who probably had a gun hidden inside his jeans pocket.
I watched as a menacing smile appeared on the man’s face, and my granny’s complexion lost all color. I crossed my arms over my chest, reminding myself to stay confident. That this fight was for my mom.
“My little Lina, how much you’ve grown,” His grin only increased in size. His eyes were glossy and red, focusing on me and only me.
“Well if you didn’t abandon me, you would have known that,” I fired at him.
Although my words were supposed to hurt, he only laughed. “You’re a feisty one, just like your mother.” He emphasized on the word mother.
I felt my blood begin to boil with anger, he destroyed the one person I loved and will ever love again. He ripped my childhood away from me with his own bare hands. He disgusted me, but what was even worse is he had no remorse. He didn’t care that I scream from my nightmares each night. He doesn’t care that my mind is haunted.
He has never cared for anyone but himself.
“I know you’re both wondering why I’m here. I guess I shall tell you then, hmh?” He let out a raspy chuckle before continuing on, “I’ve come to take back what is rightfully mine. You, my lovely Evalina.”
I felt my legs go out from underneath me and my grandmother stood in front of me. “You are not taking her anywhere, Robert. Do you understand me? You have caused this family enough damage, just go. Get out of here.”
My father took a few steps towards my grandmother. His boots dragging on the floor, sounding identical to the chains he would soon wrap around me. I was trapped, just like I had always been. There was no way out. “Why don’t you not boss me around, Gretchen? Or will I have to do to you what I did your daughter?” He said, pushing her out of the way.
My granny began crying, knowing she couldn’t help me. I would be held captive by my father for who knows how long. “We should get going now, shouldn’t we?” He said as he reached his arms in my direction.
I dodged his grasp and began to run, “NO. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE ME. THAT IS AGAINST THE LAW. I WILL CALL THE POLICE.”
My father laughed heartily and rolled his eyes. “Haven’t you got an education of some kind? Your grandmother over here doesn’t even have custody. I still do.”
“You’re an evil man.” My granny said before turning her back on me. She was leaving me. I trusted her, and she was leaving me.
Before I could say something else, I felt my body being picked up off of the ground. No matter how much I screamed or fought - it was no use. My father had power over me. There was nothing to do, so I began to cry. I had given up.
“I’m sorry Evalina... I’m so, so sorry.” I heard my grandmother call after me. And that was the last time I had ever heard her voice.
I was thrown into the backseat of some type of car. The engine roared to life and my father turned around before the machine began to move. “Get some sleep love, tomorrow is going to be a long day.”
For three years I had tasted freedom, and now that was being taken away. All in a matter of minutes..
