(A/N: Feel free to skip this unless you're confused on the story: This is going to be a fairly long author’s note, because I’m just going to explain everything to you real quick. Obviously I’m jumping around a lot for ages. So I’ll break down how old Lina was each chapter. C1- 5. C2- 8. C3(this one)- 14. Chapter three is the last one where we’ll be going back into Lina’s past, except for little snippets of it throughout the story. Chapter 4 will be in modern days. I just wanted to make some chapters to really pinpoint & describe probably the 3 biggest stages in Lina’s childhood & the 3 most important parts of her backstory I hope I cleared everything up for you guys & thanks for reading(: xo P.S.: Lina used to be portrayed by Emma Watson, but I changed it to Lily Collins. I saw a trailer to something w/ Lily & I freaked out because she was EXACTLY like how I pictured Lina.)
Chapter Three
*6 years later*
My heart pumped rapidly inside of my chest as my father pulled his black Range Rover to the curb of the new high school I would be attending. I was on the verge of throwing up from nerves, as I had never been to an actual school. My father had always been very jealous of anyone I had become close with besides him. So he sheltered me in a way no child should ever be. But now he was letting me be a part of a school community, and this both frightened me and excited me.
“I’m going to walk you in. Is that alright?” Although he asked in a question form, it was a demand. I meekly mumbled out a ‘yes’ before gathering my school books and getting out of the car. Everyone around me was so different, so exotic from one another. I suddenly felt very self-aware of myself around such a large group of people. I could feel the breathing becoming more difficult with each step I took towards the entrance.
It seemed everyone was walking in with a companion, and I was the only one with a parent. A parent who had a very firm grasp on my shoulder. He led me into the main office to collect my schedule, which had backfired in my face when a group of young girls sent comments my way.
“What a joke,” A girl with pin straight jet black hair mumbled to her group of friends; casting a glare in my direction. I wanted to curl up into a ball and never stretch myself back up. I hadn’t even been on the property for more than five minutes and I was already being ridiculed.
A loud ringing sound went off, causing me to jump. A few ladies behind the desks began giggling, “Oh sweetheart, that’s just the bell. It means classes have started, so you better get on your way. What’s your first period?”
“W-what?” I asked confused, thinking she meant my hormonal period. My response had only aloud more laughter to come my way. I was starting not to like this place.
“Oh dearie, let me see your schedule.” I handed the woman my schedule and she studied it for a moment before looking up with a grin. “US history with Mr. Simons. You’ll love absolutely love it! He’s such a splendid teacher. Make your way to the courtyard, there his room will be the 5th door on the left side.”
“Mister?” I heard my father said as he tightened his grip on my shoulder. “I’ll help you find your class then, love.”
We followed the woman’s directions before finding our way to his classroom door. As I was about to walk in, my father grabbed my hand, snapping me back. My body thudded against his torso before he spun me around to face him. He was inches from me as he began to whisper, “Remember what I told you, yeah? Stay away from men at all costs, because I’ll find out. I always do. Try to stay away from as many people as possible, I don’t like you to have to many relationships. One, female friend is all you need. I want straight A’s these next four years. Come home right after school, okay? Do you understand everything?” He asked in a stern tone.
When I didn’t respond, he grabbed my wrist tightly, making me flinch back in pain. “I have to get to class.” I whispered, trying to escape. “Let go of me.” I begged, trying to desperately get away from his grasp.
Before I could do anything else, I felt his palm connecting with my face. “I said, do you understand everything?”
“Yes, yes,” I said quickly, trying to hold back the tears. He gave me a small smile before brushing his fingers over my pale skin. His touch sent shivers down my spine.
“I don’t like to hurt you lovely Lina, but you give me no choice.” His voice was condescending and malicious. He then walked away and was soon out of sight. I stood there, feet frozen to the floor. Warm water began rolling down my cheeks. Today was turning out to be an awful day. I just wanted to go back home.
As I was about to go into US history, I heard noises not too far away. I looked up to see a curly haired boy standing in the corner of the courtyard. He was staring at me with sad eyes. My heart fell to my stomach when I realized - he had just witnessed the incident with my father. I quickly ran into the classroom before he could get a better glimpse at my face.
After about the fourth bell of the day rung, everyone piled into a large room. I followed the group, unsure of what was going on. Inside, there were long tables and chairs separated all over the room. It smelt of food. I then realized it was where we would be eating lunch. I noticed everyone was surrounding a long line of food. I joined the group reluctantly, not knowing exactly how this went.
I grabbed a tray off of a stand and began putting whatever looked appetizing on it. I mainly put macaroni & cheese with some bread, nothing else really looked at that nice. People were then going to rather large woman sitting beside a computer.
“Name please?” She asked me when I finally got to her.
“Evalina Cott.” I said. She nodded and moved onto the next student. I looked around at the cafeteria not knowing where to sit. I saw there was an empty table in the back of the room. I walked over there and sat down. I had never been social and didn’t feel like doing so today.
Lunch was going okay, decent. That is until the curly haired boy from earlier sat down in front of me. He didn’t look at me, just played with his salad. I didn’t know what to say, so I didn’t say anything. And neither did he, until I went to go throw my tray out.
“Where are you going?” He asked when I stood up. I turned around to face him, but was stunned for a moment to meet his eyes. They were the prettiest shade of green I ever saw.
“T-to go throw my food away,” I stumbled being totally caught off guard by how attractive he actually was. He just gazed at me for a minute, then looked back at down at his food. “Are you okay?” He mumbled when I returned.
“What do you mean?”
“Earlier, after what happened with that man.” He said it so casually. Like it was an everyday subject to address. No one had ever cared enough to ask me if I was okay or where my bruises were from. It was a odd, but it was a good kind of odd. For some reason, I felt anger towards the boy.
“Nothing happened. I was misbehaving when I shouldn’t have. So whatever you think happened - it didn’t. So just mind your own damn business.” I spat at him before grabbing my books and leaving. Despite all my father had done to me, I was still defending him. But hell, I had every right to. The boy didn’t even know my name yet he had the audacity to ask me of something so private.
I didn’t speak to the curly haired kid again.
