Chapter 3
Briiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnng!
Fina-fucking-lly.
I hurriedly gathered my things from my desk not bothering to listen to the teacher as he tried to remind us that we had homework over the weekend. Never mind the homework, it was finally the weekend. Students were visibly relaxing, smiles became more genuine and even the teachers rushed out of the school, clutching car keys tightly, looking like they'd rather be anywhere but here.
Maneuvering my way through the students towards the exit I thought about yesterday's events.
I cannot believe I actually let Jonah see me like that. After I'd washed the makeup off of my face, I'd left school early and went home to sleep off the day's events. I was always exhausted after an episode.
I'd shown up early to school today in an oversized black sweater and baggy jeans. I was trying to be more invisible than usual. I couldn't face Jonah again. Even though he'd said he wouldn't ask questions I knew he would because that's what people did. They asked so many fucking questions until they knew every single detail and then they decided it was too much to handle and they left. It never failed and it took me long enough to see that.
Every time I heard his deep voice echoing in the hallway, I ran off in the opposite direction. I took the long way to all my classes and left my hair down so it would cover my face.
I entered into the bright school yard and held up a hand to cover my eyes against the bright sun. I squinted and looked around and observed the groups of people. All huddled together dressing in early fall red flannels and Ugg boots. Heads were thrown back in laughter and eyes sparkles in excitement and anticipation for the weekends parties. Couples stood off by themselves and I watched as love stricken girls stared up at their boyfriends beaming faces and I felt a pang in my heart.
I would never have that.
I pulled my hood further over my face before heading toward the parking lot when I heard someone call me.
"Aine!" I cringed and turned on my heel to see a flushed and still attractive Jonah heading towards me. He was clad in an expensive looking leather jacket and black boots. His hair looked as if he'd spent hours styling it though he probably just ran his fingers through it. His brown eyes were bright and he looked strangely glad to see me. I forced a smile on my face and waited for him to catch up. "What's up? I haven't seen you since yesterday?"
"Oh...I've been in class." His face fell before his expression hardened and his warm eyes froze over. I blinked at him and he smiled frostily back at me.
"So, you haven't been avoiding me?" My eyes furrowed in confusion at his sudden mood swing. Avoiding? I mean of course I was, but how would he possibly know?
"Jonah, I just met you..." I laughed nervously. "Why would I be avoiding you?"
By the time we were a good enough distance away from anyone else I hadn't even noticed how far we had walked. I narrowed my eyes at the students who seemed miles away before snapping my eyes back to his. Jonah stepped closer to me and his smell invaded my nostrils. I leaned closer and my eyes closed briefly as I mesmerized his scent. What was that delicious smell?
I hadn't realized how close we stood to each other until I felt his breath fanning my face and my own breath hitched in my throat.
God...
His eyes were still closed like mine had been and I observed how long his eyelashes were and how soft his hair looked.
My hand twitched again.
