The late afternoon sun streamed through the trees, throwing shadows over everything. Carmine hid in them as she crept slowly forward, keeping her senses on high alert. A twig snapped about 15 yards behind her, and she froze. After a few seconds of silence, she slowly turned around…
And let out a sign of relief. It was no enemy; instead it was her Deputy, Ermé. Carmine slunk back to him.
“What’s taking you so much time that you end up being yards behind me? I need you next to me in case we’re attacked.” she said seriously. She was a little disappointed in Ermé, he of all people should understand that time was of essence while they were in theAdonisTerritory.
“Apologies Carmine, I was checking these tracks to make sure no one is planning on ambushing us.” Ermé said. “No worries, though, they’re days old.”
Carmine frowned. That made no sense. She had already checked for tracks and there hadn’t been any. Trusting Ermé, Carmine ignored her confusion and just continued with her silent, steady pace towards Mira.
Mira was the small trading town on the edge of the Adonis and CaneTerritories, a two hour distance from where they were. Carmine had to pass from Atalanta through Adonis to reach Mira. The Adonians weren’t particularly vicious warriors, but lately they had been kicking up their patrols for some reason. Carmine liked to avoid the soldiers for obvious reasons.
Carmine& Ermé reached the town quickly and without problems. Mira was a bustling center for merchants, traders, really folk of any kind. Carmine, dressed only in a simple but attractive leather garb, fit right in. Ermé didn’t as much because of the large bow he carried with him at all times. No one seemed to notice though, and they proceeded to head towards the shop of their trusted friend and doctor, Asclepius.
“Long time.” He said with a friendly smile.
Carmine smiled back stated what she needed.
“We have a small outbreak of Aegerous in some of our eastern villages. It’s not bad, but it’s enough that we ran out herbs quickly enough. We need more, preferably of your strongest. Now is not the time for a problem like illness.”
Asclepius nodded in agreement.
“There is never a time for death, that’s for sure.” He said while he busied himself with fetching the right herbs for a mixture. “Illness is much like war in that way. More than just the warriors die. Innocents die whether you plan for it or not.”
Ermé shrugged. “That’s why you should plan for it.”
Carmine shot him a look. That wasn’t the way she liked him to talk. Second in command should have more value placed in life than that.
Before she could voice her reprimand, Asclepius gave her a burlap bag filled with the herb mixture.
“That should do it. Don’t hesitate to visit now and again, it gets lonely in this busy town.” He said, eyes twinkling.
Carmine smiled, her ire forgotten. Asclepius was the closest thing to a father she would ever have. She waved goodbye, and headed out of the shop, the little bell on the door ringing behind her. Ermé followed her and soon, they were on their journey again. Since it had been early evening when they had arrived at Mira, Carmine and Ermé traveled deep into the night to return to their territory, Atalanta. Once they arrived, around 3 a.m., Carmine met up with two of her fastest runners, who would relay the medicinal herbs the suffering villages. She bid them farewell, and continued on her way towards the capital, Odema. She would relax now that the herbs were being delivered, maybe explore the city and see how much fun she could have.
Kick some ass, and tease a few drunkards, she thought, and smiled.
Teasing wasn’t exactly hard for Carmine. She was a seventeen year old woman, extremely young for her position as Viceroy for the entireAtalantaTerritory. She had tumbling dark brown hair with natural highlights from the sun that went to her waist. Her eyes were a gorgeous shade of hazel, and her skin was lightly tanned. Her nose was straight and fit her face nicely, while her lips were a deep red. When she smiled, which was rare these days, she had a single dimple on her cheek. The high cheekbones that ran in her family gave her a look that singled her out as a leader. So no, she didn’t have to try at all to get male attention, which was probably the reason she didn’t want it. Carmine had fun rejecting men and giving their egos a hard time.
After dinner with Ermé, Carmine took a relaxing bath to soothe her muscles. Around midnight, she donned her simple clothes, a dagger, and her special hair clip filled with a sedative in case anyone got particularly rowdy. Then she set off on foot towards a pub her friends had mentioned to her.
When she walked in, Carmine was greeted by loud music and the sight of at least 5 grown men brawling in the center of the room. People cheered them on and were making bets on the winner. Carmine laughed to herself at the sight, and headed to the bar to get a drink. The bartender raised an eyebrow at her.
“The name’s Baun. I think I should point out you’re much too pretty to be in a place like this,” he said, gesturing towards the fighting. Carmine smiled, allowing the barman to think she was young and stupid. She laughed and said,
“Ask me what I'd like, Baun.”
“What are you gonna drink, ma’am?” Baun asked, not really knowing why he obeyed.
Carmine ordered three shots of his strongest mix, but this time Baun knew better than to argue. She downed them each consecutively, and went to join the crowd surrounding the brawlers.
