The story “Cry, the Beloved Country” by Alan Paton was a wonderful tale of discrimination and segregation of South Africans on their own lands. It was a happy story in a devastatingly sad way. It spoke of Kumalo, an African priest, and his jaunt through Johannesburg. It all started when Kumalo received a letter from Msimangu, another African priest. The letter, simple as it was, held great surprises that were yet to be told. Once Kumalo read the letter, it was like opening Pandora’s Box, all evil was unleashed. Kumalo’s sister had moved to Johannesburg, and the letter said that she was sick. It said that he should go to Johannesburg immediately to help her. When Kumalo arrived at his destination, he realized that the discrimination there is more than he had ever imagined. He went on a jaunt to find his sister, but little did he know that what he was to find was much more valuable yet not, at the same time. While on his journey through the city of negativity, he found his brother and his son. He found out that his brother had become a fine democrat, but we all know that democrats have their fair share of sins. He found out something about his son that no one would ever want to know about their child. He found out that his son had done what no man should do; let alone what a priest’s son should not do. He had to endure the agonizing pain that no parent should ever have to endure. He found out that his son had… You will just have to read the book. It is a story that speaks of awful, dreadful, and abominable behavior. Nevertheless, it is a superb, redeeming, favorable tale. And remember… NEVER judge a book by its cover.
