Samantha O'Dair P.O.V
Moving day is here.
Evona Lae stopped by a couple of times to help me pack. I am the one that broke the news to her that her family was moving too. She thought I was kidding, which of course I would never do because I think kidding around is a waste of time. I am not like her brother Addison who loves to tease her. After I told Evona Lae that they were also moving, she ran out of my room, out the front door and all the way to her house. When she got there, she grabbed a bunch of suitcases and started stuffing them with her things. About an hour later she ran back into my room, out of breath and declared she was ready for the journey. I only respond with a smile.
On Thursday, I went to school to say goodbye to everyone. My class threw me a goodbye party. It was a sweet gesture. I bet those kids couldn't wait for me to leave. They didn't like me much because I was the teacher's pet. I always got the right answer in class.
As I was leaving the school, I ran into Addison. We smiled at each other and continued walking. We haven't spoken much since he told me they were moving. I think he was in shock. He actually has a life here, I can understand if he doesn't want to leave.
On Thursday night the Parker's and my family went to Luigi's our favorite pizza place. My parents actually seemed to enjoy themselves. They had been really stressed about the move. I understood why, we were leaving everyone and everything we know.
The movers show up. It's an hour earlier than expected. Mom panics because she isn't completely packed.
"Samantha? Can you bring me the bubble wrap from the living room?" yells my mom from her room.
"Okay I will grab it right now," I holler back at her.
I hand mom the bubble wrap and begin to walk around our empty house. This would be the time when most people start to freak out and decide that they don't want to go. But I am ready. I stand in the middle of our living room when my mom starts yelling again.
"Samantha? Can you please tell the movers they can start loading the big stuff? Also I need your dad right away to help me pack the last of our things."
"Okay. Dad is over at the Parker's. He told me before he left that he needed to go over there to help them with something," I reply.
"I really need him. Samantha? Can you please go over to the Parker's and get him?"
"Fine," I agree.
I walk over to the Parker's house. I realize that this is most likely the last time I would be at their home. As I arrive, the moving truck is leaving. It is ironic how my family and the Parker's are so different. The Parker's are so much more organized than us. They are also really good at keeping a schedule. My family likes to wing things. For example last year we got to go to South America for something for my Dad's job. He had to check on how the military troops were doing. My dad is a general in the Marines. Crazy right, he isn't even that old. We were getting ready to board our plane from D.C to New York my dad got this idea that he would stop by the sandwich stand and try to eat a sandwich before the flight. He actually finished it before we boarded. If the Parker's were in that situation I think Mrs. Parker would slap Mr. Parker on the hand and tell him he can eat at the next airport.
I find my dad talking to Mr. Parker about something that looks like an important matter. They both look around like someone was watching them. I approach my dad and scare him.
"Samantha! What on earth are you thinking? You scared me," says my dad.
"Sorry, I figured you could use a smile, you and Mr. Parker look really paranoid and I thought that you could use a laugh. Anyways I am here on behalf of mom, she needs your help with something". I say to my dad.
"Okay I will be right there. I should head home and check on the wife. Be careful Mason. Keep your phone on just in case something happens. "
"Okay. We will see you guys in Canada," says Mr. Parker.
I don't leave with my dad. I know my mom is going to be fussy so it is best to stay away from her.
"Hi Samantha, How are you on this beautiful day?" says Mr. Parker.
"I am doing excellent. Do you know if anyone needs help? The movers are over at our house and mom is stressed out. I would like an excuse to not be at our house." I reply to Mr. Parker.
"You can go inside and check. I will be coming inside in a couple of minutes."
I enter their house to find Evona Lae sleeping on the hard floor with her favorite stuffed animal and her favorite blanket that she has had since she was three. I find Mrs. Parker in the kitchen making sandwiches.
"Do you need help with anything?" I say in the quietest way possible so that I don't wake up Evona Lae.
"Could you wake up Evona Lae? That's all I really need help with. Evona Lae hates it when most people wake her up. She will be happy to see you when she wakes up. "She says.
I barely make it to where she is sleeping when Addison decides to be an annoying older brother and wake her up before me. Mrs. Parker tells us to go outside and play. Evona Lae convinces us to play tag for the last time at their house. Once we are done playing, I check my watch it is almost nine. I need to get going.
"I have to be going now," I say.
"Don't leave me Samantha. I can't be in a car with Addison for three days," says Evona Lae.
"I have too. I will see you in Canada. We are going to be neighbors. We will play all day when we aren't in school. I promise." I tell her.
We hug one last time before I leave. On the walk back to my house I think of all the things I need to grab: my backpack, my pillow, and a couple of books I left out for the drive. By the time I get to my house the movers have finished loading the truck and are just waiting for me so that they can start the drive. I run inside and grab my things. Then we leave as if we had never been in Washington D.C.
Three weeks later
It is the day before everything goes wrong. It starts off as another Sunday morning. Life is starting to get back to normal. My family has this weird tradition where every other Sunday we have a family fun day. No phones, no electronics, no nothing that will distract us from having fun with one another. Today just so happened to be the fun Sunday. We didn't get the chance to have our fun Sunday two weeks ago because we were still unpacking. We leave around 1 pm to go for a drive. We spend the day driving around White Rock. We stop a few times to look at shops that are along the docks. I am beginning to really like it in British Columbia.
After we were done driving and walking around town it is dinner time. My family loves trying new things. We try a Peruvian restaurant near our house. It is different from anything I have ever experienced. I have a plate called Lomo Saltado. It was meat, french fries, onions, tomatoes, and rice. It tastes like a nice steak dinner. But when you eat it, it feels like you are eating fried food. I think it had some soy sauce in it. For dessert I have a piece of cake called Tres Leches. It is made with three different kinds of milk. It is really soggy because of all the milk. It also tastes like cinnamon.
On the drive home no one says anything. I think about how I can't wait for our next fun Sunday. We arrive at our house twenty minutes before eleven o'clock at night. We are exhausted. We all say good night and that was it.
