Chapter Three
(Addison Parker P.O.V.)
"I call shotgun!" Evona Lae squeals, running to the front seat of my new truck. As she reaches out her hand to open the door, Sam rushes past her and beats her to it, climbing inside. She shuts the door and locks it, before rolling down her window and resting her elbows on it.
"Samantha!" Ev squeals, putting her hands on her hips dramatically. "I called dibs, bro. Out!" She points to the back seat, as if insinuating that Sam sit back there. I roll my eyes, trying to suppress a laugh. Ev and Sam fight a lot, but it's always playful.
"Losers, weepers." Sam jokes. "Sorry peanut, but your dad said no. He wants you in the back." She adds sympathetically, placing a hand on her shoulder. "That, and you ain't cool enough to sit up front."
"Ain't isn't a word." Ev mumbles.
"Why thank you." I chime in, grinning at Sam. She looks at me skeptically, before finally realizing what she has done. She called me cool. That may seem insignificant, but Sam never compliments anyone. So, it's a pretty big deal.
"I didn't mean you."
"You know you love me."
"Whatever."
Ev brushes Sam's arm off and crosses her arms over her chest, pouting. "Well I hate you both."
"Well climb in already. You can hate us from the road." I open the door behind the driver's seat and throw my backpack on the seat, before shutting it and climbing in behind the wheel. Sam tosses her bag over the seat, it landing in the middle of the back seat, right next to mine. Ev climbs in on Sam's side, a scowl on her face. Once all the doors are shut, I turn on the ignition and listen to the engine purr to life.
"Ready?" I ask.
"Ready." Sam responds. Ev stays silent.
We are currently in the State of Montana at a small gas station located between Bozeman and Helena. We decided back in D.C to meet up with the O'Dairs somewhere close, but before, the U.S/Canada border, in case there are problems that arise, so we can assist one another. Sam asked if she could get a ride with Ev and I, probably needing a break after many hours locked up in a car with her parents. I get it, and willingly agreed.
Sam, Ev and I in a car for a couple hours, without parents- it's gonna be an adventure.
As I get ready to pull out of the parking lot, dad walks up to my window. I roll it down, and he hands me a grocery bag filled with snacks: a bag of spicy pretzels, red licorice, birthday cake M&M's (three packages to be exact), three waters, and a couple sandwiches. Needless to say, we aren't the healthiest bunch.
"This should tide you over for a while," dad says, smiling. "And here's a map." He hands me a map of Montana, one of those cheap ones you buy at grocery stores. Every time we entered a new state, he'd buy me a map to help navigate my way through, in case we got separated or I had to stop. It's been quite helpful.
"Thanks. I think we're all set."
"Good. Then let's head out. Drive safe."
"Yes, sir." And with that, we're off. I buckle my seat belt and plug in my iPhone, turning on Florence + The Machine- Dog Days Are Over, to be exact. Ev and I have the weirdest obsession with this song. As soon as I turn it on, her mood changes. She smiles brightly, her eyes lighting up.
"Yay!" She squeals, clapping her hands.
"Happiness, hit her, like a train on a traaaaaaaaaack. Coming towards her, stuck still, no turning baaaaaaaaaack..."
