Taking the bus the next day, I was proud of the ensemble I had put on today. I had made sure to buy a shirt that fit me perfectly and a skirt that made my legs look long. Atleast that's what the saleslady said. Plugging in my earphones and playing catchy tunes was a habit I developed in college owing to how much I hated overhearing weird conversation about people's sexlife and how their cat puked furballs and dirtied their carpets. Not my style.
Besides looking out was a wonder of its own. I didn't stay in New york city. It was far too pricey so I had to find accomadations on the outskirts. I'm not complaining as it gave me a beautiful view of how the most happening city can be.
I was too immersed in thought to realised the song had stopped and my phone was ringing. I hurriedly picked up.
"Hello?"
"Hey sweetie"
"Oh hey mom."
"Ready for your first day on the job?"
"How do you know it's my first day? I don't remember telling you." I replied perplexed
"Em told me about it when I called to check up on you since you weren't answering"
I rolled my eyes. Emily Blake was my best friend who couldn't hold anything in her stomach even if her life depended on it. We met in college as she was roommate and we've never looked back since. I can't remember any college memory, funny moment, breakups or movies without her not being in it. We were stuck to the hip. Her being the carefree party animal and me being the studious yet fierce recluse. Opposite do attract. But oe thing that never changed is her habit of spilling the beans when poked.I told her about my interview with Davon and to say she was gaga for him was an understatment. She practically worshipped the ground he walked on and was more excited about my job than I'd ever be. All my explanations of what a jerk he was fell on deaf ears as she refused to admit her online husband, who mind you she had spent years stalking could be anything less than an angel.
But then I realised I could take her information as a basis for when the war he wages against me. Know thy enemy they say. I started laughing demonically and she looked at me like I was possessed by a demon only an exorcist can fix. So I asked her all she knew about Satan and she happily obliged me with all his details.
Davon Silversmith was a 27 year old Billionaire who started a company after dropping out of Howard at the age of 19. Why did he drop out despite having a full scholarship? College was boring and meaningless to him and according to him ' taught him nothing but how to waste time that could be used to make money'. Well played Satan well played. After that he started his own buisness of Mobile phones and after it's success moved to real estate and hotel investment. But buisness wasn't the only thing he moved on to. To say he was a player was an understatement. He flaunted a new girl every month like a soldier flaunts his battlescars. And no one, I repeat NONE OF THE GIRLS HE DATED , was less than a supermodel or a superstars. He got rid of them as fast too. My insides were shouting MANWHORE throughout the ordeal of listening about Satan's numerous tales of how paparazzi caught him with some women or the other often in comprimising postions.
" Sorry mom I was a bit busy shopping. Anyway I scored the job of my dreams " I laughed into the phone. My parents weren't very well off but they raised me and my brother with whatever they had. I get my fierceness from my dad who happens to be a mechanic and a backbone of steel from my mom teaches autistic children. And I felt proud telling them how well they raised me. I am what I am all thanks to the sacrficies they made for me and I will never forget that.
"Oh honey I'm so proud. My baby already to take on the world. Don't forget to relax and don't stress yourself. It's a job not your life. Have fun whenever you can"
" Sure mom. I have to go now. I love you have an amazing day" I smiled into the phone.
"Bye honey. Take care of yourself. I love you" And with that she cut the phone and my song came back on.
I walked into the glass doors and checked the time as I walked into the elevators. 7:38 am. Perfect. Office starts at 8 so I'm well before time. I started lip synching to Fifth Harmony's 'Don't want to dance alone'.
As I hit the chorus the elevator doors opened and you can imagine my surprise when I was left singing"I got my best dress on, and I feel like dancing all night long" to an awaiting Davon.
Yes he was standing right outside the elevator. Yes I was singing Fifth Harmony. Yes the whole office was watching. Yes I wanted to kill myself.
"Why am I not surprised this is the best dress you have? Late and that unimpressive attire. *tsk tsk*What a glorious first day." Davon said loudly, unimpressed.
I swear to god nothing pleases this man. NOTHING I TELL YOU !
"Office starts at 8 as what I'm told."
"I expect my advisor to be here by 7 am sharp."
"Nobody informed me so I assume you think I have telepathic abilities?"
"You are late and you have the guts to talk to me in that tone?" He replied with a glare that put Medusa's snakes to shame. But I wasn't succumbing Oh no no no. I will show him what happens when Ice meets fire.
"What tone Sir. I was merely stating why I was late to an office that starts at 8 when it happens to be 7:42am "
"Go to your office Miss Hastings. I will talk to you in private" He said through gritted teeth.
"I am sorry but I would like to speak about whatever it is infront of everyone"
By now I could see his pretty face turn red and his blood boiling. Before I knew it he stormed off to his office.
I smiled triumphantly. Mia- 1 , Satan - 0. I could get used to this. Walking to my office I could see people looking at me with shock and awe. I put my chin up and strutted a full blown Victoria Angel's catwalk as I went to my office.I sat down on my chair and started reviewing the folders put up for me sighing at the paramount of work. A glorious start to my first day indeed.
