I lay on the uncomfortable hospital bed, impatiently waiting for my doctor. It was nine in the morning and my pap smear appointment was scheduled for eight thirty. I looked out the nearby window, scanning for Dr. Smith's red Honda Civic which was nowhere to be found. With my schedule already mixed up, I decided to take a nap. Studying for my upcoming midterms had been so stressful, I had barely slept over the past few days.

The squeak of the opening door bolted me awake. As I looked up at the wall clock, I realized that I had been asleep for almost half an hour. I turned to face the foreign looking doctor who was waiting for an answer to a question she had just asked. I nodded even though I didn't know what she had said. All I wanted to do is go back to my dorm and sleep on my comfortable white, linen bed.

"Alright then. My name is Dr. Hailee," she said "Dr. Smith has a family emergency so I am attending to her patients as well as mine, hence the delay. Are you okay with that or would you prefer to wait for Dr. Smith?" the redhead doctor asked while placing her folder on the table beside me. I had been an intern at this hospital for a while and yet failed to recognize her. She must have been one of the foreign doctors who came in annually.

Dr. Hailee was merely wearing a pink midi dress and a white lab coat, yet I couldn't stop gazing at her. A doctor could literally wear rags, as long as '"a white coat" is on top of those rags and it wouldn't matter. It was actually one of the reasons I wanted to become a doctor. However, my desire to specialize in obstetrics surgery was because of my mother. She passed away after giving birth to me, which was why my father and I were very close. I practically told him everything; well not "everything everything." I didn't tell him about my love life anymore. All of my past boyfriends would mysteriously break up with me right after meeting him. He claimed he never terrorized them but ever since I stopped introducing them to him, my relationships lasted longer.

Coincidence? I think not!

Other than that, he was the best father a girl could hope for, even though my mother was not around, he raised me to identify with both my mum's afro-Dominican ethnicity and his Colombian heritage. He also made sure I was close to my mother's family despite his issues with them.

"Yeah it's fine," I said answering Dr.Hailee's question and laid back down on the bed.

"Alright then, let's get started," she said snapping on her white latex gloves.

I was currently in the middle of my physics exam, trying hard to concentrate but I could feel my head spinning out of control. I had been having this weird feeling of nausea the past few weeks. I wish I had time to go to the hospital but my midterm exams were super intense and I needed to keep up a perfect GPA in order to retain my Princeton scholarship. I felt a sudden rush of heat so I began hand-fanning myself while squinting at my exam paper which seemed to double.

"Amelia, are you okay?" I heard my best friend, Sasha ask. I nodded.

"Are you two done with your paper?" asked Mr. Burke angrily.

"No, we're sorry sir," replied Sasha whose gaze was still locked on me.

"That is your first and last warning... both of you, next time I will..."

I couldn't hear what he said next for in a matter of seconds, I was face flat on the ground and everything turned pitch black.
