Almost every chapter should have them. They don't have to be huge like the major plot twist of a story, but just a small expression change or even introduction to a character!
Say, you could have a really bouncy character who loves everyone and everything but OH NO. They want to get revenge on someone. Something as small as that forces the reader to read on.
I also use short sentences. (No short sentence intended...) They add dramtaticy, intensity and... fear! In a way they build up adrenaline in a chapter. What I did to start my first book was put an emotion as a personal pronoun so the protagonist seemed to be talking to themself! It works a charm. :)
Another way to keep the reader interested is to say when you're going to update the next chapter- say if it's 3 days- they can wait. That's perfect. A week? I for one am a little impatient.
I'll update this chapter as I come across more ways to keep the reader interested!
