He visited her every day.
He'd push back his guilt and walk to her residence with a fresh bouquet of flowers clutched in his trembling hands.
Every time he brought new flowers to her, she never would accept them and instead left the blossoms out to die. Every month in which he returned to her, he would find the previous bouquet bruised, battered and broken; the petals wilting as if heartbroken.
He would stare at her and beg her to tell him why she left him, who could possibly be better to her than he.
"I'm a burden for that person
That person still has a dream
But that blinding memory of when we loved beat me"
She wanted to fly, he remembered, and he had promised to let her. She dreamt of traveling the world; he also swore that they would go everywhere.
Every memory tore at him, clutching at his chest and twisting his heart.
He had promised, but she left him.
And now he was alone taking flowers to the girl who would never return his affections.
"No matter how many times I fought it
The wall of warned love made me crumble
My head understands but my heart can't let you go"
He should have listened; if he had never fallen in love with her, he could be living freely. Yet his heart still yearns for her despite the reasoning he experienced in his head.
They say the head and heart work together, but every day felt like a constant battle. His head told him to stop, that she didn't love him anymore, that she had moved on and yet his heart kept trying to reach out to her, to get her back.
"Even if my everything crumbles, I like you
Even if I try to throw you away
Even if I try to forget you
I like you, I liked you"
He spent every night trying to drink her away, to drown out the susurrus of her voice in his ears. His entire heart had been given to her and he loves her so much.
He loved her.
