So many promises had been made.
He'd promised to protect her from everything, promised to protect them.
She'd promised to stay by his side as long as he kept his own vow.
It wasn't easy, trying to get over her. Whenever his head began to clear and his heart felt lighter, he'd be struck down by the appalling reality of guilt that pounded his back and sat on his shoulders, gloating it's victory over him.
It would snap at his throat, it's teeth sinking into the vulnerable flesh. With its armored hands it would reach into his chest and rip out the heart that yearned for the girl to whom he'd promised endless graces.
