A FEW YEARS LATER; 1951
I am in Secondary school, year 7. I was 12 and he was 11. Over the past year i have been trying to meet new friends in my grades. Hailey had moved back to London, Kayla and her brother had left schools,i never see them, they live very far away, and John was a grade bellow me. He wasn't doing good in school at all, he usually gets Cs. But me and John have been good friends over the years, He's told me more about his life and he'll tell me whats troubling him. His aunt Mimi had gotten more stern over the years sense i first met her. His uncle George take me and him out and we had so much fun.
Today was Friday, our last day of the week in school and when i get home John and his uncle are going to take us to the cinema. Good thing with Uncle George is that, we can do anything! Well almost anything, but must of the time anything. My dad was always home late and me mum was working so i usually went home with John.
"My aunt is here." John said opening the door for me.
"Thank you." I smiled and walked out. We walked over to the car and got in.
"Did you kids have a good day?" She asked.
"Yep!" John replied.
"Didn't get into any trouble i hope." She said with no emotion at all.
"No i didn't." John frowned.
"Fer, where did you say your mother worked again?" She asked me with some joy in her voice.
"At the Walton Road Hospital." I replied.
"Thats a little far isn't it?"
"Yes, ma'am but she doesn't mind. My dad just drops her off in the mornings then picks her up when he comes home. My aunt will be moving so i will be going home with her after school than with you." "We're always happy to have you." She said.
We got home and then left on foot with Mr Smith.
After that John walked me home and i took the key from under the mat, then i waited for my mum and dad to drive up. I waited for an hour.
'what is going on?' i asked myself. 'Their is never this late.' I went over to the radio and switched it on. Nothing interesting was broadcasting at night, but a comedy was fine with me. I sat in my dad's chair and curled up and tried to fall asleep.
A knock came on the door. I sprung up and ran over. peeked through the window to make sure it was them. It was a tall figure wrapped up, wrapped up from the cold of September. It nocked again. I went over, maybe it was my aunt. I opened the door. It wasn't my aunt, i didn't recognise the lady.
"Who are you?"
"Your the William's girl right?" She asked breathlessly.
"Yyes." I said slowly.
"Im sorry, but they have had an accident. There ate the hospital, but are unconscious. Do you have some where you can stay?"
"I do. What happened though!" i asked.
"A car collided with theirs."
"Are they alive!" I was afraid.
"Yes, their both alive." She said putting my hands on my shoulders.
A tear fell down. "May i see them?"
"Im afriad not. They wouldn't be able to talk and the hospital is about done for the night. I have to get back to my family. If you don't have a place to stay you may stay with me."
"No...i...i have a place...to...to stay."
She bent down and gave me a hug. "It will be okay. Don't cry."
"What if, what if they die?" I asked.
"They wont." She replied.
I was crying uncontrollably.
"Come, where did you say you could stay?" She asked.
"At 251 Menlove Avenue." I said.
"Alright come along." She said and took my hand.
We walked over to John's and she knocked on the door. The lights were all out and it took a while for them to answer.
Mr. Smith answered the door. "Yes?"
"Hi, My name is Mary, i work at the Walton Hospital. And this girl, said she could stay with you."
"What happened?" Mr Smith asked noticing me crying.
"Her parents were in a reck and are in the hospital, so she doesn't have a place to stay. She said you could keep her."
"Of course we can!" John's uncle bent down to me.
"Thank you though Miss." He said to Mary.
"No problem. I just wanted to make sure if they had children."
"Thats nice of you to do. Can you come in?"
"I have to get back to my family."
"Oh, yes then you better. Do you have any 11 year old boys?" He asked, my guess was he was trying to find a new friend for John.
"No, but i do have two boys, ones 9 and ones 7. Maybe they could play together some day, but we're very far apart." She chuckled.
"Okay well i best let you go. Bye and thank you."
"Thank you. Goodbye." She said and gave me one last hug then walked away.
"George. Whats going on?" Mimi asked she was coming down the stairs in her night gown.
"Fer's parents have just had a reck outside the hospital and Fer will be staying with us. For tonight."
"Oh, im sorry to here that, deary." She said.
"Where can she sleep?"
"I can get John to sleep with us and she can sleep in his bed."
"Okay, come on, Fer." Mr Smith giuded me to the stairs. Mimi took me up the rest of the way, George followed.
John was carried to his aunt and uncles room and i was placed in his bed. It was warm from John's body heat and i was tucked in tightly. The crying that i had don earlier had made me drowsy, so i had no problem falling asleep.
