"JACK!" Mark yelled, grabbing onto Jack before he could hit the floor. Jack's eyes were wide and he was gasping loudly.
"M-m..." He tried calling out for Mark but could only manage a plaintive whine.
"Oh god oh god oh god no what do I do oh god..." Mark mumbled nervously, rocking Jack back and forth. Toriel raced towards them.
"Oh, no! What's happening?!" She gasped, covering her mouth. She took Jack from Mark's arms, despite his strong protests.
"Oh, dear...I know what to do, I-I can use my magic..." Toriel said worriedly, covering him in a green light. Jack found himself able to breathe again. He was no longer shaking or anything. He felt fine, and he told Toriel as much, despite her looks of concern. He failed to notice, however, that the black streak through his heart had increased in size. It took a long time to defuse the situation and calm both Mark and Toriel down.
------------------------------------------------------
"Make sure not to leave this room, alright?" Toriel warned them, stepping out to get some errands done. She looked nervously at Jack for a second, before trotting off. Mark and Jack nodded obediently, except the second she left they immediately nodded at each other and stepped out of the room. Almost as if through psychic powers Toriel called Mark (who was put in charge of the phone) as soon as they left. After lying through their teeth, they found another odd glowing SAVE point. After Jack poked it, they continued on in their exploration of the ruins. Both of them decided to hide their hearts in their shirt pockets.
They stumbled upon a Froggit first in their journey, and Jack immediately opted to start attacking it. Mark had to hold him back from annihilating the poor frog, who quickly hopped away. After a few more encounters of the same caliber, Mark and Jack made a compromise-Jack would FIGHT it until it had half health, so it would be easier to kill it if they ever needed to in an emergency, and Mark would ACT properly to spare it.
They worked through the puzzles easily, fighting monsters using the aforementioned tactics. They learned many interesting things about how to spare creatures, and found multiple SAVE points scattered around the ruins. Jack even picked up a toy knife., against Mark's better judgement. Eventually they made their way to a black and intimidating-looking tree. Toriel came around the other side of it, about to call the boys when she spotted them. She immediately hurried over and scolded them gently, before leading them into her house.
"Surprise! I have made you both a cinnamon-butterscotch pie. Since you are new to the household, I shall hold off on snail pie for tonight." Toriel winked, chuckling. She showed them to their room, which Jack and Mark immediately fell asleep in the comfy bed. On top of each other. Not even bothering to get under the covers. When they woke up, they saw two slices of pie sitting on the floor.
"Hey, she's really nice." Jack observed simply, smiling gratefully. He accepted the pie, placing it inside his pocket. ((So sorry let's pretend they have magic pockets like item storage, okay? Sorry)). Mark did the same, and they walked out of the room. Their curiosity got the better of them and they snooped around in Toriel's room, finding a diary full of bad skeleton jokes, a detailed book describing "water sausages", and a bucket of snails.
Giggling lightly, they popped out of Toriel's room and trotted towards the dining room. They saw her reading by the fireplace, and waved a shy hello. She waved back, smiling gently. The boys went into the kitchen, looking around in there. Jack opened a silverware drawer.
Where are the knives.
He quickly shut it, not wanting to hear that voice again. Mark was too busy entranced by the enormous pie. It was too intimidating to eat. He pointed at it and Jack chuckled, before sighing. Despite everything amazing here, he still wanted to go home. To his family, and his normal life, and to the place where the voice couldn't get him.
Too late, Sean.
The boys walked back to Toriel, standing by her chair.
"Oh, up already? It's a pleasure to see you both. I've done my best to prepare everything you'll need here. I've even devised a curriculum for your education. This may come as a surprise to you, but I've always wanted to be a teacher....well. Maybe it's not so much of a surprise. NONETHELESS, I'm sure you'll be happy here. I'll take wonderful care of you both." She smiled. Jack and Mark glanced at each other, having a telepathic conversation, before Mark got the guts to ask the question.
"How can we get home?" He asked nervously. Toriel looked startled.
"This...this is your home now. ...I-I know! Would you like to hear about the book I am reading? It is called "72 Uses for Snails"." She said hurriedly.
"How can we leave the ruins?" Jack asked determinedly.
"...there is something I must do. Stay here." Toriel replied quietly, a somber look on her face. Jack and Mark watched her stride quickly off.
"We have to leave, Mark. Please. I want to go home." Jack pleaded. Mark looked down at him, sighing quietly. He felt a pang in his chest. He didn't want to leave Toriel. She'd treated them so nicely. But...if he had to. For Jack. Always for Jack.
Mark smiled sadly.
"Alright. Come on." He held Jack's hand gently, leading him downstairs where he'd seen Toriel go. They followed her down a long hallway.
"Please. Go back up to your room." Toriel said quietly, hearing them behind her but not turning around. They didn't stop.
"This has happened before. It's happened many times. They come. They leave. They die. Please, go back upstairs..." Toriel warned. Mark and Jack pressed on.
"This is your final warning." Toriel murmured, stepping towards a large door. Mark and Jack took one more step, before she spoke again.
"This...is the exit to the ruins. I am going to destroy it. I cannot allow any more deaths. I cannot let him..." She faded off, turning around.
"If you wish to leave so badly, I scold your naïveté. Prove to me, at least, that you are strong enough to survive on your own!" She challenged, a ring of fireballs circling her. She raised her arms, preparing to bombard the boys.
Time to shine, Sean.

A/N: Hi guys! I am aware I totally botched Toriel's lines here. Be patient with me, you're going to have to live with it. Sorry!
