Chapter Seven
‘Copenhagen come on!” The Duke shouted and kicked his horse. He was holding the reins too tight and I knew he was really focused on winning.
My own excitement built and I felt Vizir respond and surge forward with a gush of energy.
Mrs. Canines looked absolutely petrified as the two large horses loomed in her vision. She worried for her charge and did not notice when a company of people approached her from behind.
The Duke and Sarah were also too wrapped up in their race and each other to notice their new spectators.
As they drew closer to the determined finish line a loud aggressive voice broke the Duke’s concentration on his beast and Sarah’s dark hair beside him.
“I see now why you favour hiding away here Wessely!” Shouted a large man beside Mrs. Canines cloaked in a deep rich royal blue coat and riding trousers. He had dark brown hair and livid brown eyes that at this moment unnerved the Duke so much he lost the race to Lady Sarah.
“Wooohoow! I won!” Shouted Sarah with an enthusiastic laughter. She does not seem to have noticed the large man and his companions. But they certainly noticed her and her dishevelled appearance, rosy cheeks and bright eyes.
The young large man took a particular pleasure in observing her and the Duke noticed this as he drew nearer to his new guest.
“Your highness, what do I owe this pleasure?” The Duke got down from his horse and greeted the Prince of Wales, George V and Regent.
“Wessely, stand man and introduce me to this delightful creature that just beat you in a horse race” The Regent said turning away from the Duke to Lady Sarah who Mrs. Canines was fussing over to correct her hair and dress. She quickly pinned her bonnet and curtseyed to the Prince.
“My Prince, my sincere apologizes and humblest greetings” Lady Sarah greeted the Prince. Her thoughts were at disarray and she has yet to fully assess the situation she finds herself in. What was the Regent of the UK doing here? Was a question that was going through her head.
“Your Highness, Prince of Wales, this is Lady Sarah Lieven McCartney, my neighbour Earl of Essex’s niece” The Duke introduced them.
“Indeed, my dear your uncle has done a good job of keeping you hidden, and what a treasure you are to be kept” The Regent drew closer to her and took her hand to plant a chaste kiss.
“Thank you my Lord, but I were never kept anywhere but have recently returned from the Americas”
“Charming” Was the Prince’s only reply as he continued to closely observe Lady Sarah.
“My Prince, may we go to my study, I am sure urgent business brings you here” The Duke said in attempt to draw the Prince away from Sarah.
“Wessely, yes, I am here on a personal matter but I believe that can wait. Now Lady Sarah, care to walk back with me and tell me more about the Americas?”
“I am afraid Sire, I have business of my own that cannot wait, will you excuse me?”
At the first the Prince looked taken back and his two companions drew in a sharp breath. He was not a man that women refused, but this only added to the increasing intrigue of Lady Sarah. Something she did not realize but the Duke noticed.
“I do apologize Lady Sarah, I know I have kept you long enough, Your Highness I do hope you do not mind but Lady Sarah does have an urgent matter to attend to” The Duke said in support of her and she gave him a puzzling look.
