Her light brown hair tied in a tight ponytail, Abigial Griffin finally sat down to rest for a minute. She'd been swarmed with patients and chancellor duties all morning, and had barely had any sleep the night before. She was worried, as usual but this time it wasn't about Clarke. It was about the infuriating,I-do-what-I-want, handsome,Marcus Kane.
He had left to meet Indra and hadn't come back in a few days.
What mess did you get yourself into this time, Kane, She thought.
"Penny for your thoughts?" A familiar voice echoed through the room. Abby's head immediately turned toward the sound. There he was. The idiot who had left without saying anything. His clothes were covered with dirt, he had a small smirk on his face and a light in his eyes that he seemed to always have whenever he was around her. Abby stood up, crossed the room in a few quick strides, and tightly hugged him. With her arms around his waist, and her head on his chest, she could hear his heart beating faster than usual.
"What was that for, Chancellor?" He whispered in her ear. She moved her head and looked straight into his eyes.
"Don't ever do that again, Kane" She put a finger up to silence him as he tried to argue..
"And don't call me Chancellor, we've both moved past that."
"Abby, I was looking for Clarke." He argued.
"But you could've gotten hurt, I can't lose 2 people that I love!"She yelled then she stopped. Stopped talking. Stopped moving. Stopped breathing. She had just admitted something that she'd been trying to deny to herself for the past 3 months.
"I'm sorry, I mean you're my friend so, I care about you."
"Yeah that's what we are. Friends." There was a flash of pain in his eyes but it was gone as fast as it came. Marcus Kane had always been good at hiding his emotion.
"I have to get back to work. " He nodded his head at her, his smile gone, a stern look on his face. The warmth and happiness that had filled the room when he had walked in disappeared and Abby found herself shivering.
Over the next few days, Abby tried to focus on her patients, they mattered to her more than anyone. They needed her help. Every time she saw Marcus, she could hear her heart breaking. With every emotionless word he said, she felt more and more guilty. He had gone back to being Kane. Marcus was gone. His smile, the light in his eyes that shone whenever she was around had died, it was as if his soul was dead and all that was left was his body. Every night, Abby cried. She cried for her daughter, she cried for her lost friend. This was even worst than if Marcus had died. He was there but he wasn't there. It was like his source of life and happiness had disappeared from his life.
"Abby?" Raven said, coming up to her as she was lost in thought, staring outside of camp. She turned and saw the young brunette coming up to her. The mechanic put her arm on the doctor's shoulder and squeezed.
"Jackson needs you in Medical." Abby nodded and started walking back. "Wait," Raven grabbed her arm, "You okay?" Her eyes were filled with worry and fear.
" 'M fine," She smiled, lightly, trying to convince both herself and the girl.
But little did she know the pain Marcus felt.
After Abby had called him just a friend, his heart closed. It had been open and ready for her to take since she had saved him, yet she never did. The former Chancellor had thought, and hoped, that she felt the same way towards him, that ever since they were stuck under those rocks, she had loved him as more than a friend. But he had obviously been wrong.
He focused on the camp, making Arkadia stronger. He still sent a search team for Clarke, but it wasn't for Abby. It was for the rest of the camp who missed her. Every time someone talked to him, he answered something meaningless, it was as if part of him was there but the other half wasn't. Every time he saw Abby, the pain started all over again, the scars deepened, his heart started bleeding again but he couldn't show her that. He talked to her like he talked to soldiers, his voice monotone, his body there but his mind somewhere else.
A few weeks later, everything changed. The camp was having a party for God-knows-what,Marcus hadn't really been paying attention, and he decided to go back to his room. He walked in and took off his jacket, he was reaching for his shirt so he could changed to go to bed when he heard a knock on the door. He opened it and there she was. Her usual jacket was gone, she was wearing her PJs, she looked exhausted.
"Chance--"
"I'm tired of this, Marcus. Please come back, I know you're still in there and I'm sorry for what I did. I've been denying how I felt for months because I was too afraid but this is too painful. I need you."
She put her hand on his cheek, he flinched back then leaned into it. She stood on her toes and kissed him. Her lips tasted salty from the tears streaming down her face. He kissed her back, immediately, feeling himself come back to life. She was reviving him, his mind was filled with her and only her, the way her hair felt as he run his fingers through it, the way she put her arms around his neck. She pulled away when they ran out of oxygen.
"I need you. I need you," She repeated, her forehead resting on his," I'm sorry. I'm sor--"
"No more, sorrys. It's all over." He wiped away the tears with light kisses, "Abby, I can't live without you. You bring so much happiness in my life that no one else can. No matter how much we argue, I will always love you. No matter how much you rebel against me, I will always love you."
He kissed her again. Putting all his emotions into it, kissing for all the lost times, kissing her like he'd dreamed of in this month of torture. When they pulled away, he whispered, "Since I can't call you Chancellor, what do you want me to call you."
"I think Abby will do just fine" She smiled, took his hand and together they walked inside his room, forgetting the past and focusing on the future. Their future together.
