Alone

Double update! I just posted a smut chapter a few minutes ago, but you don't need to read it.

After Jongin graduated, he decided to go to the local community college so that he could stay near Sehun.

At the age of twenty-one, a sophomore in college, Jongin's parents were reported to be in a fatal car accident.

He didn't let himself cry until he saw the merman that stole his heart. He poured his heart and tears out while being held by Sehun.

Jongin was at the joint funeral when a thought struck him. He was alone. There was no one left for him. No one would be there to watch over him or cook him meals. He was alone.

After his parents were buried, people came up to him to wish him their sympathies. They were family members, classmates, acquaintances, and they were all people that didn't care about him.

He felt like he was suffocating in the presence of all these strangers. He just needed to get out. He needed to breathe.

The second the last person was out the door, he was on his way to the one person that's always been there for him.

The sun hadn't even set yet, but he was still running towards the shore. He didn't stop when he reached the water, he just kept running. The water reached the point where his knees were hidden by his suit. He didn't bother to take his clothes off as he sunk down into the water, letting it caress him as he sobbed. Moments passed of his heart wrenching sobs before he felt a hand on his shoulder and he was pulled into someone's warm embrace. He knew exactly who this person was; the only one who cared about him.

The slow rocking motion of the merman caused Jongin to calm down. When Jongin finally looked up at him, Sehun pressed a soft kiss to his forehead and whispered, "Everything is going to be fine, Jongin. I promise."

That night, Jongin fell asleep in his lovers reassuring embrace. Sehun moved them over so that his back was resting against a moss covered rock and his tail was in the water.

Jongin woke up with the gentle glow of the sun in his eyes and warm arms wrapped around him. He smiled and turned to press a kiss against Sehun's lips.

"Thanks for always being there for me."

"I will always be here for you, Jongin"

"I know."

Jongin still had to face the upcoming day and he knew that he couldn't hide away with Sehun the whole time so he got up to leave. He truly didn't want to go, but he had many things to figure out.

Begrudgingly, he made his way back home. He unlocked what was now his house. He didn't stop to stare at the flowers on the table nor did he stop to look at the last note his mom left him hanging on the fridge. He headed straight to the bathroom. When he entered he was greeted by his disheveled appearance. His suit was crusted over with dried sand and his skin was a pasty white color unlike his normal deep tan. His eyes were puffy as they traveled over his form. What caught his attention was a necklace. It was simple, but it meant so much to him. It was the seashell that Sehun had given him the first time he saved him strung onto a piece of wire. It was Sehun's way of saying that he was here for Jongin.

He ran his thumb over the smooth surface of the shell and felt instantly better. After taking a shower he got dressed in order to meet with his lawyer.

Do Kyungsoo was a good lawyer. He was quiet and finished his work with extensive perfection. All of his father's assets were now in his hands after his meeting with Kyungsoo.

Jongin was now in charge of his father's company. It was a modest company, but being the CEO still took a lot out of Jongin by the end of the day.

He still made time in his busy schedule to visit Sehun everyday. He looked forward to weekends the most, when he could spend the entire day with Sehun. Each time Sehun asked him how he was doing and would reply with 'good' or 'fine', but Sehun knew that was far from the truth. He could tell Jongin was slowly dying. He had lost his motivation to be happy. His conversations weren't filled with spirit and his actions lacked conviction. The Jongin he knew was no more but a shell of a man. He was a fish out of water, waiting to shrivel up and die. It hurt Sehun to see the one he loved most in so much pain.

This kind of behavior had been going on for almost two years and Sehun had to put a stop to it. Each time he saw Jongin, he had lost weight and had darker circles under his eyes than he did the last time.

"Jongin, this has to stop." The younger had been sitting three feet away from Jongin. He had set new boundaries with Sehun after hearing all the comments of him being too skinny when they made love. They haven't been intimate for over five months.

"I don't know what you are talking about, Sehun"

"Yes, you do!" Sehun said in a pleading voice. "Jongin, I don't think you understand how much it hurts me to see you like this! I love you so much it's physically painful for me to not be around you. I never told you, but your emotions are transferred to me because I selected you as my soulmate. We only ever love one person in our lives and how do you think it makes me feel knowing that you could die at any moment? It fucking hurts, Jongin. You wouldn't know the pain because only merpeople can feel emotions! I need you, Jongin. You can't just leave me."

Jongin was dumbfounded to hear Sehun snap at him. He had always been the calmer of the two. Jongin sat in silence and thought about what Sehun had said and he was right. He was hurting Sehun.

"Sehun.......I'm so sorry."
