Kennedy Emmens is not mute, though many think that she must be. Kennedy is mearly silent, and that is absolutely fine with her. She has not spoken a word since she was four. Yes, Kennedy knows how to speak, she just chooses not to. After all, it is better to stay silent and be thought a fool, than speak and remove all doubt. That's what she tells herself anyway.
After her mother gets a job and forces Kennedy to move to California, Ken discovers that not everyone is as accepting of her silence as everyone back home were. Especially Ryan Rodes, the schools 'Golden Boy'. He finds Ken's lifestyle perplexing, and he will do anything to brake her code of quiet.
